Maybe the really specific stadium talk should move to the stadium thread.

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=188287

I did a short tour around central downtown and had a couple of observations:
  • The area is really bustling with al the great weather this week.
  • Conexus has a promo set up on the Plaza. I think this is a good use of the Plaza, within reason. I assume they have a permit and pay a fee to the City.
  • Drywalling is virtually complete at Twenty10. The extremely high ceiling has been painted black, so no, they will not be dropping the ceiling.
  • The Park is a mess with all the dead grass from the skating rink and the Grey Cup Festival.
  • The TD Building is undergoing a re-cladding/re-glazing. It is not yet clear if they are changing the look from the classic Mies van der Rohe style copied from the Seagram Blg in NYC and the TD Centre in T.O.

^I hope they don't change the look of the TD Bank Building. It's a great contrast in our downtown core. I've always loved TD Centre and Mies.

Yes Mies had a great architectural style. And it should be preserved.

It will never be quite the same as TD Centre though as the Regina does not have full length windows. I would like to see the cladding on the top 2 floor replaced as it is faded and cheap looking.

Hopefully they are restoring it to its original jet-black Lustre. It certainly has faded since 1974.

It was never jet black. It was, and still is, dark bronze anodized aluminum with dark bronze-coloured. The colour has faded little over the years. Not bad for a 40 year old building.

I noticed Flynn Curtain Wall and Glazing - or whatever the exact company name is - has a sign up and some tube and clamp scaffolding. I just assumed they were doing maintenance repairs. But they are doing more than basic stuff and going to reglaze/ or redo the curtain wall?

Interesting... So the Deli Llama spot didn't stay vacant for long then. Will be nice to have some patio space on that side of the ped mall too (Chopped Leaf? may have some too, I suppose). It's turning into quite the little patio/restaurant block (which I find pretty amazing).

Telling people they have no taste and no understanding of architecture is not an insult worth even stopping to think about. The idea that what I said was a grave insult is so preposterous I don't even know where to begin.

The previous design was better. The new design is not stunning, it's pedestrian and not noteworthy.

Frankly, I was never a huge fan of building a new stadium, and certainly not a fan of the location, but I fail to see how anyone can argue that the design isn't STUNNING and will be a symbol of civic pride for decades to come.

Congratulations to the design team. I really hope they actually come through with a final product that is substantially similar to the initial concept.
I don't care what people who have a financial stake in the project make up.

Actual wind studies demonstrate one thing: they've designed it so the wind goes through the stadium like so:

Edited.

There's nothing stunning about it. It's not great architecture, it's standard, bland architecture that you've seen in every stadium for the last 10 years. We didn't step out and create something that will win any awards. It's not going to bring more people to the city, it's not going to create jobs and it's not going to make the Riders play better.

We could have built something nice like the Allianz Arena or the Cape Town Stadium. Instead we got a large, grey corrugated building with partial coverage. What's to get excited about?

The main winds are from the NW and SE you have drawn them coming SW to NE completely backwards.

BTW who pulled you out of the wrong side of the bed this morning? Bitter much? If you hate it so much and think it will have as little affect as you believe then leave.

Also for over 500+ Million Canadian we could of built an Allianz Style Arena. What's to get excited about...? It's not the current Mosaic. That thing is crap, and renovating it would be like polishing a turd, you still have a turd. I am happy that we have people in this province willing to take chances and try new things. Because people like you who shoot things down are why we are where we are today. Innovation leads to more prosperity. The worst phrase in the English language is, "We have always done it this way." Move out of the way and let progressive people try to get things done in this province and see how it pans out. Because the first 100 years of conservatism has clearly done us a world of good.

That I did, fixed it. It will still directly enter from the SW corner then exist through the gap on the NE.

You're the one who ran off the Saskatoon. If a person can't critique a $300 million white elephant that is boring, is open to the winds, directs noise towards the only residential neighborhood around it, and isn't downtown, what is there to critique? We're supposed to just accept that fact that the stadium is a perfect fit and will fix everything? Why?

I only used the Alllianz arena as an example of good architecture. Regina's is standard stadium architecture. It's not hard to just admit it.

The issue is that you are mistaken. Stadiums do not make a good cities. They don't drive economics or good living. Investing is solid urban planning principles, investing in useful infrastructure, and supporting people not sports teams.

The stadium is the equivalent of putting a bird bath in your backyard and pretending it will save your property value. Nonsense.

It will come in and swirl a bit, But it will butt against the NW stands. It won't be whistling through as you say. I really wish they would of released wind tunnel test videos with this design. That would of proved their claims to the skeptics.

I will have you know I am moving back to Regina next week. And I am happy to have my taxes pay for this.

Nothing is perfect. But once built I will bet that a lot of people who were nay sayers will go, WOW, why didn't we do this years ago? Not all people are sports fans (Rider fans) but why should we not get a cut of public funds as well when a lot of other areas have had funds that we don't enjoy or like? Just because it doesn't suit the nay sayers wishes doesn't mean that we can't have a piece of the pie too? How selfish is that?

I think what a lot of people (including yourself forget) is this isn't JUST a stadium project. It is a project that have $750M give or take, of private funds going to develop where the stadium once was and the old CP rail yards. Bringing the North downtown / warehouse district closer to downtown as a whole. THAT is the part of this project that will deliver economic development and be better urban planning. The stadium move was to allow for a development to happen. So to say that this stadium has nothing to do with economics is non-sense. This stadium move is a driver of millions of dollars of investment to come in the next 5-10 years.

Yes, and I'd like to have the taxpayers buy me a Maserati but I don't force by wishes on the general population. Taxes should be used to support everyone not subsidize a wealthy sports team and at most 2.9% of the population.

We have unsound bridges that need replacing that carry more than 33,000 per day and yet we can't be bothered to replace them.

Public projects should be for the public good. A stadium fails that test easily.

I believe wind studies show that in the fall/winter the winds go from NW-SE. So your updated diagram is still completely wrong. In the summer they can come from the SE (as your diagram shows), but no one cares about the winds as much when it's 25C out.

Someone correct me if I am mistaken about the winds in the fall, but I believe that is the case.

Annual statistics show that the prevailing winds at Regina are out of the SE 50.5% of the time. The second-most common direction is out of the NW.

Wind direction instruments don't always follow general surface wind directions and intensity; wind is corrupted [generally] by: convergence; divergence; mechanical turbulence; gusts (via diurnal variation); and frontal passages.

During the spring and fall months, the jet streams tend to take on a 'radial' flow as air masses shift south and north respectively. Conversely, during winter, weather fronts emulate a 'zonal' flow.

To answer your question, the same principles apply to both spring and fall weather. (Due to similar weather circumstances.) Winter and summer are also generally the same with each-other because of their own respective frontal characters.

I hope this helps.
