Yes, indeed, these were taken around 8:00 on a Sunday morning as it was the only point in my three days in Winnipeg where I had enough free time to go on a nice leisurely walk through the city. I do want to go back at some point where I actually have enough time to check it out more extensively.

Well, the prairies in general have the general reputation of being cold, flat, boring, crime-ridden, etc. but Winnipeg for whatever reason seems to have it worse. Unfortunately I just don't hear many positive things about it most of the time. Of course, having grown up in Saskatoon I knew that stereotypes weren't everything and fully expected it to be nicer than what people were saying, and indeed it was. But it does definitely get a bad rep from a lot of people.
