So this will for sure end up as Western Canada's tallest building when all is said and done?

That Edmontonian looks mighty tall

Well it will certainly be the tallest in Western Canada upon completion. The Edmontonian has a slim chance of being built, but it won't be started for years at best, and won't be completed for years after that.

You do NOT have to worry about the Edmontonian I don't think.

Knowing Edmonton, even if the commercial demand isn't there they may just build it anyway as a 60 story mall.

Yup.

Well before becoming Tervita they also did EAP and Courts Parkade as well as some other pretty big ones - just under a different name. Because they also do demo, they often sit pretty come excavation for the demo projects they do win.

Actually I would love to see the Edmontonian built - it would up the ante in both cities height wise.

Agreed, but the location sucks.

I might be dreaming, but it looks to me like they are flattening out the bottom at the Brookfield Place site. It doesn't look like it's more than 15 meters down though, the excavation was supposed to be 22 meters.

That is deep! It's difficult to grasp how deep it goes from street level.

Now imagine if they hollowed out a little space for a subway station under 2nd st when they dig up phase II....

It looks like they've made some decent progress since Chad's pic on March 28th. The ramp on the Northeast corner is completely gone now.

I think it could get built, but maybe under a scaled down design. Building it as tall as they have shown wouldn't be as cost effective as say, a 30 or 40 ish story tower. I would compare the location as something similar to where Guardian is being built. They got it going at 44 floors with lots of smaller cheaper units. I could see the same for the Edmontonian given the location.

Oh wow, and they have moved that entire pile of rubble from the centre of the pit! Probably preparing for the next/final stage of excavation!

All I can think when I look at that hole is that I really, really, really want to play Minecraft instead of sitting in my office.

I can't see why a private company would build a concrete box outside their property line 'just in case' a future LRT line was built under 2nd St.

However, I can see the same private company would make provisions in their underground parkade so that with a knock-out wall, their building could connect to a future LRT station mezzanine under 2nd St.

There are unconfirmed rumours that buildings built along 8th Ave in the last few decades have similar provisions for underground connections to a future 8th Ave subway if it is ever completed. And of course, there are the known LRT tunnels under City Hall that line up with the future 8th Ave subway. The existence of these tunnels was confirmed during the flooding last year.

The existance of those tunnels has been confirmed for a decade. During a transit strike in the early 2000s, urban explorers went down into the tunnels and took a bunch of pictures, some of which have been posted on the forum. There is even a station platform roughed in under Olympic Plaza. After that became known to the city, they walled off the portal entrance.
