They have started on the next level down. Probably another 5 months of excavation to go at this rate. A crane up by August sounds pretty nice

That picture way above shows how the Caisson shoring works when they start digging. It looks like they excavate to show the rounded pour and then I believe the excavator scoop will simply carve the mortar mix to even out the shoring. I assume the concrete mix is probably a weaker strength to allow this.

The geology seen in the excavation is kinda cool. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems as if downtown Calgary is on a giant bed of Glacial till with no sign of bedrock at all.

Yeah I think for most of the city, bedrock is a couple hundred meters down.

No problem guys, it's my pleasure. I'll also be doing regular updates of Telus Sky once it starts.

Calgary is one of the most seismically stable regions on the continent. Has there ever been an earthquake over 2.5 in this city?

Err, to my recollection more like 18 to 25 m (in the Downtown which I presume we're more or less referring to here).

Why the need for raft slabs if bedrock is that close? Or, is the bedrock too soft to anchor towers?

We just get frost quakes, so nothing too crazy hopefully in the ground under our downtown. I think the bedrock is still deeper than the excavations of most pits.

Maybe I was thinking of Regina? But I thought we had a discussion that Calgary's downtown bedrock was over 100 meters down? It would make sense that it is close to the surface though, as the bluffs and the Paskapoo Escarpment have exposed bedrock so close to downtown.

Bedrock is close as 25 feet down. Downtown Calgary is mostly gravel as it was a glacial lake bed. The bigger issue is horizontal sheer as the bedrock is unstable.

Looks like they've gone down another 4 feet or so over the past week.

Fitting, they did approximately the same thing with percentage of employees in the past week.

Tervita I believe.

I did not realize they are in the business of excavation. Was the entire site contaminated which required remediation?

It wasn't the entire site that was contaminated, it was just the basement/foundations of an old long-demolished hotel in the Northwestern corner of the site that required remediation.

Thanks for the updates guys. Beautiful day in the city today!

So this will for sure end up as Western Canada's tallest building when all is said and done?

That Edmontonian looks mighty tall
