To Utah:
California 12,172
Idaho 6,617
Colorado 6,398
Arizona 5,916
Washington 5,298

To Colorado:
California 15,150
Texas 16,616
Arizona 13,790
Florida 8,766
Nevada 6,402

To Idaho:
Washington 10,604
California 5,331
Utah 5,129
Oregon 5,093
Montana 3,385

To Arizona:
California 38,916
Texas 18,908
Colorado 10,589
Nevada 8,748
Washington 8,362
Utah 7,966

I do have to make a correction, the 18.3% in-migration as a percentage of total growth was incorrect. I neglected to include the number "Different residence, same state 1 year ago"

The basic numbers are 87,870 total in-migration, 82,165 from other states, 5,705 foreign. Much of that may be returning LDS Missionaries.

To be honest, the more I got into that spread sheet the more difficult it was to extrapolate the information I was searching for.

Umm....that's not what I said. The space was not designed or built as it was permitted to be. It doesn't matter who will ever be in there now; without some extensive renovation, it won't conform.

And Texas de Brazil could add to café life on Main, if their space allowed it. An establishment doesn't have to be a café to do that, as evidenced by Cheesecake Factory (though that's an admittedly poor example); it's just a Jacobsian term.

Texas was a late addition anyway, as CCC couldn't (and still can't) attract the food establishments they'd planned for.

Ronald McDonald House extension

Someone asked for another pic of the Ronald McDonald House extension on South Temple. I am sure architects considered the view up 900 East which is somewhat centered on the portico, but at least in a midday light, the head on view is noticeably flat. In my opinion the original building to the east is more successful, but I appreciate that there may have been pressure for a supposedly more historically evocative style.

And it is definitely an improvement over the previous gas station. We've gone from 4 (pretty sure there was one at K) to 3 (E St.) to 2 (both at M) and now only one left on East South Temple. Why they were ever allowed is a mystery to me.

And a slightly different angle of downtown from Churchill Drive (perhaps unlikely to appeal to the forum since it flattens the view and hides several taller building).

On the contrary Merewether, I've always appreciated that location. It makes the main road through the city look very dense!

I agree with you both. Downtown's size looks shrunk, but it does look very dense.

I prefer this view, as it shows off the size and density.

ToysNoiz that picture is awesome! The car in the foreground is sweet.

And yes, that angle is the most dense i've been able to find so far (But always looking for more).

Yeah, nice wheels, ToizNoiz!!

I really like the view of downtown from the angle of the Spaghetti Bowl, although that may just be that it's the same angle I grew up seeing from the West Bench in Kearns. Looking down from the Kearns Library, or the hill that Kearns High School is on at night is actually quite lovely, even though it's the other side of the valley.

The only thing I'll miss about removing the red neon from the Shilo Inn is that it gave a distinct sense of scale from far away--one that stuck out from the other white/yellowish lighting that you can see from that distance.

Blah blah blah. Nice car.

I'm quite partial to this angle—and not because I took the photo.

I love how, I dunno, charming the low-rise buildings look between the COB and the Cathedral of the Madeline.

That is a nice shot. 111 and 145 will look amazing from that angle!

I agree. This is already one of my favorite views of the city...because it's the one without the mountains and It really is just the downtown. As it grows the view is only going to get better

111 and 145 added to the shot! Accuracy and quality are not the best but it gives you an idea just how much these towers are going to add to the skyline!

^^^

You win. I've always loved that shot (good job) and it will only get better with the addition of 111 and 145* soon enough.

*WHAT IF 145 GAINED TEN MORE STORIES???

Sorry.

It's very unlike any other major city in the US. Some would say in a good way, others say they'll never visit SLC because of it and everything in between. They are OPINIONS, but opinions that impact growth and development. I sometimes am very excited to live in Salt Lake and be a part of it as it "comes of age," and it really is a uniquely beautiful city, but it's hard to imagine myself staying here permanently. I know many others who feel the same way. And this environment, that alienates so many is what holds Salt Lake back from realizing its potential as a major US city.

I agree with Scott and brankrom...even though I may be a part of the problem with the SLC community. My opinion when dealing with problems like closed-mindedness and closed or divided communities is to stay in that community and try to help open the minds, help build bridges across the divides. If I can help my fellow (let's just say church members) see the good there is in other lifestyles, viewpoints, and people, then I hope I can be a force for good. I like to think I have friends who are republican and democrat, Mormon, non-Mormon, gay and straight. I'd include stupid and not stupid, but it's really hard to be friends with stupid people. Or have them as siblings-in-law.

In any case, I'm glad that for now, at least, you're part of this community, and adding your voices to the mix. Because we need more voices heard.

Yeah, I'm with you Jedikermit. Salt Lake is pretty progressive, sometimes it's just moving much slower than I wish it would. I've lived in a number of major American Cities, or spent significant time there (LA, Chicago, New York, and Milwaukee) and sometimes I really just miss them, especially during these last few months of winter. I'll be totally high on Salt Lake once everything starts blooming. I really think there's no more beautiful place in springtime than SLC.

And I would seriously doubt you're "part of the problem." I admire you're attitude towards other people and their differences, and I think if we all could be that way, Utah (and the world, for that matter) would be a much more peaceful place, and amazing advancements would accomplished. People are people, with their own codes for living life. I just wish there was more balance in Utah when it comes to the church/state/major corporations that in Utah are all pretty much different limbs of the same entity. That lack of balance gets frustrating, and I think it breeds two extremes of proponents and opponents. I try to stay fair, but get sucked to one side sometimes.

I think that's the heart of the problem. The people (and organizations) become so extreme that there never is a dialogue between the sides. Just statements of their own positions, with no possible middle ground. And you're right, it's off-putting. And other cities and states have that problem at times too, but I think there are issues that make it especially pointed here. The issues might be different in other places, but this is what we've got.

And I am part of the problem. Superdouchey.
