I like the mountains

I also love the huge city blocks and large parking lots that take up prime real estate in SLC.

Back to development.

I drove by the Brides Project. Looks like they are in full swing there. The density that will make up the west side is going to be awesome in a few decades...Yes...even with the monstrous residential project planned west of the gateway. I would really have liked to see the Residential project they had proposed west of the Storage building on 200 S.

New poster here, checking in. I've been reading the SLC forum on SSP since day one and decided it was time to join in the fun.

Jazz are positioned very well for the future. 5 players under the age of 23, all selected in the lottery, who are transforming into great NBA players, with another top 10 pick coming their way in June.

The team is constructed to be bad this year, so the young guys can get playing time, but they're playing better than expected. We currently have the youngest team with those young guys playing serious time since the 1964 Detroit Pistons. In 2 years time, we will have completed one of the fastest complete team rebuilds via draft in NBA history. Jazz are the most winningest franchise to never win the title, and that winning culture still remains. Since Trey Burke came back from injury, Jazz are playing above .500 ball, which is lightyears above what we were projected to be playing.

Spurs have been great for awhile, but they will soon have to enter the rebuild phase. Duncan said he is thinking about retiring at season's end, and once that happens, you know Pop and Ginobili will too, while Parker will be traded somewhere else. Where does that leave the Spurs? They'll have a very long rebuild. With no stars left, no core of young players besides Kawhi, no more HOF coach. W/O Duncan and Pop, San Antonio won't be a destination city for free agents, it will just be another small market NBA team with little hope.

*I* was the one who put 330' to the top of the flagpole. I've done quite a few buildings on Google Sketchup, back when Google Earth showed them. I took pride in figuring out the height of the buildings. My model had the top of the flagpole at 330', so if the engineer said 328', I don't feel too bad missing it by a couple.

I've tried cleaning up Wikipedia on the list of tallest buildings in SLC, but someone keeps going back in and changing the heights back to those listed in Emporis (which is NOT accurate at all, just sayin...).

My model of the American Towers came out at 294' apiece, but I noticed that they were labeled as "Air Traffic Control Towers" on Emporis, which makes me question if that extra 30' was an antenna that they removed. Anyhow...continue...

Seriously? 99 West is one of the most hideous recent towers in the country. It looks like something leftover from 1991, but with a worse color palate. And the interior finishes are even worse.

I don't mind PRI taking over, but it is concerning when any developer, no matter who it is, owns that much of downtown. Quality urban environments require disparate development influences.

People bitch and whine about how Utah is "too Mormon" is about as silly as somebody living in Rome whining because there's too many Catholics in Rome. Really why live here then if you truly hate Mormons so much that you'd almost have to go out of your to find something to whine about?
Some of us really do contemplate moving away nearly everyday. I'm not saying that to be antagonistic or to incite any kind of argument, I just want to make the point that though there is so much about Salt Lake and Utah that make it a wonderful place to live, in many ways its incredibly unwelcoming. It's very unlike any other major city in the US. Some would say in a good way, others say they'll never visit SLC because of it and everything in between. They are OPINIONS, but opinions that impact growth and development. I sometimes am very excited to live in Salt Lake and be a part of it as it "comes of age," and it really is a uniquely beautiful city, but it's hard to imagine myself staying here permanently. I know many others who feel the same way. And this environment, that alienates so many is what holds Salt Lake back from realizing its potential as a major US city.

In relation to another conversation that's happening on this thread, honestly, the one thing that makes it hard for me to consider moving elsewhere is the idea of abandoning my Utah Jazz.

I'm just annoyed that anybody is tearing down existing buildings downtown (particularly an architecturally significant one like Prudential Savings & Loan) when 30% of downtown SLC is PARKING LOT!

And to think city leaders claim to be supporters of sustainability...

Immature, yes, but I was being nice, and she decided to be rude. So I did the same.

Remember: you only get respect when you show respect.

I've wondered how many people on this forum even like the city/state.
If you only have negative things to say, why join?

I'm not saying names...

Not a FA destination? True.
Little hope? Ha. Jazz history is full of some of the greatest players to ever play the game, period.

John Stockton holds two of the most unbreakable records in any sport. No one will break his all time steals record, and no one will ever come close to breaking his all time assist record. Book it.

Etc, etc.

The Spurs never would have been if they didn't full on tank for Duncan. He is the sun to that solar system. Once he retires, there will be no signs of life.

Conversely, the Jazz were able to jump from the Stockton and.Malone era to the D-Will era almost without missing a beat, and then from there with this season being our first losing season since D-Will.

Point is, Jazz past is full of glory, and their future is bright, and will be bright for a very, very long time.

Success is determined by championships. That's what Michael Jordan said, greatest player of all time. Ever heard of him? I think his name might ring a bell and bring back some dark memories for Jazz fans. It's also what Charles Barkley said, and he didn't ever win a championship.

Tell me how many championships the Spurs have, and also tell me how many the Jazz have. Thanks.

Spurs have the greatest power forward to ever play the game. They also have a top 3 NBA coach of all time (Red Auerbach and Phil Jackson being the other two). 4 NBA championships.

Shall I continue?

It does usually take more than an hour or so for the moderators to jump in. You are right though, talking about the Jazz, their players, their success and non success etc is completely off topic.

I'm not saying the Jazz aren't relevant to development discussion as in the number of people they bring to downtown so many nights a year, and how many people ESA brings downtown for other events. How building ESA (DC) began the transformation of the west side of downtown, how LHM gambling to keep the Jazz here has been a catalyst in where SLC is today and possibly a key in us hosting the 2002 games. These are all development Jazz related topics.

That is probably true, but it can cause arguments that can go on for days, and has nothing to do with development.

Seriously? Do you really have to cry for help any time someone says anything uncomfortable? Debate is healthy.
