I still believe that as of right now YYC can easily accommodate non-stop OGG service year round, doesn't have to be daily (they aren't this winter anyways).

I think it is also very likely that the new 737MAX's coming for both AC and WS will be able to operate YYC-Hawaii flights with no restrictions.

I can already hear YUL trumpeting out the "well YYC is all domestic, look at all our international numbers" stuff, well numbers are numbers regardless of where they are coming from.

exactly. It doesn't matter that YYC has more domestic than international. It matters that we are now the third busiest airport in the country

I think the whole YYC/YEG to SEA idea has been put on the back burner by DL. The biggest thing in American airline industry right now pilot shortage caused by the new crew rest regulations. The new regs have hit express/regional airlines the hardest because the mainline airlines use regionals as the farm team plus there are minimum hours regulations so the regionals cannot hire off the street.

UA solution to the pilot shortage is to pull down the CLE hublet. UA kept mainline services but axed the majority of the regional flying. Other airlines are trimming the fat (unprofitable) from their regional network. DL was all ready pulling a lot of 50 seat CRJ services out of their system. Most of the DL SEA experiment is with 76 and 90 seat regional jets, so I suspect that their SEA plans may be downgraded a little bit until the regional airlines can catch up with pilot hiring.

Looking at the notion of YYC overtaking YVR on a permanent basis within the next 10 years.

Current delta is 3.6 million pax. last 10 year have narrowed this delta by 2 million.

Factors beyond general economic indicators will have to be realized in order for YYC to be the #2 airport.

Biggest factor that could help YYC is introduction of a general aviation terminal to capture the 500k plus charter traffic that currently flies out of the FBOs and up to Oilsands area. Under this scenario YYC constructs a facility similar to YVR's south terminal. This new terminal would allow YYC to claim the pax and domestic figures. Currently this type of pax is not included in YYC figures where as under a common use terminal concept the airport authority can lay claim to this pax type. Although it would seem odd project to build terminal just to get this pax type into official figures, the underlying base reason is that this type of pax could get north of 1 million pax per year and require larger facilities for ground side (car parking, checkin, security) and airside (air bridge, larger apron, etc.).

Second factor that would have to come into play is the possibility of WS gets into the international longhaul scene very quickly and choses YYC over YVR as the western hub. Under this scenario WS would do 2-3 cities in Asia, 3-4 cities in Europe, plus HI runs and 1-2 cities in Caribbean on widebody airplanes. Also WS would have to do their wide body expansion without affecting incumbent airlines (BA, KLM, AC, etc).

Third factor is the current drain on YVR traffic to the USA continues (ie nothing gets resolved with the cross border fee issues, border hassles continue at the same levels for both car and airplane). YYC gets a pax boost because we are so far from a comparable USA domestic airport, this advantage has top continue.

Fourth factor is that YVRs expansion into secondary Asian markets only proves to be marginally successful. If the secondary markets take off, this could add several million new pax to YVR figures and cement YVR as the primary Asian hub. Note this would also stunt YYC Asian market demands.

Canada and Mexico are putting new air travel measures in place that should boost tourism and business opportunities between the two countries, Mexico’s ambassador says.

The ambassador said he is particularly hopeful that direct flights will open up between Mexico City and Calgary because he expects the Canadian city to become an important hub for Mexican energy companies seeking outside expertise.

^^^ Wow that's a lot of ifs. YVR just had a record year and things wont be slowing down anytime soon. Congrats to YYC in becoming the third busiest but 2nd will take a long time if ever.

I can't see YYC ever passing YVR. Its nice to have ambition but perspective is a lot more practical, and closer to reason. Way to go YVR for having a record-breaking year. Finally passed 2008 figures.... YYC in the meantime, passed 2008 by 1.6 million this year. That's perspective.
