The WS press release also doesn't state which seasonal routes will go year round, along with which other routes will receive increased frequency. It would have been nice if they went into more detail.
This is likely in anticipation of AC Rouge who is expected to announce its western Canada route network and schedule in the next week or so.

To be exact, WS to LAS is up 228 seats for the summer vs what they're flying right now, plus 348 additional seats from YMM. They don't want to give up anything to Rouge. Maybe this flood of seats will make it possible to nonrev/buddy pass to LAS... tough these days.

If I'm flying to NYC, I'll still take the AC flight despite having to deal with EWR... but that's just me.

Westjet to exceed 100 daily flights next summer

With the new Westjet scheds, the total YYC weekly ops will total:

570 MAINLINE (down from 603 last summer)
140 ENCORE (up from 42 last summer)
710 TOTAL or approximately 101 daily flights!

Transborder will exceed 11 flights per day with the addition of 6 more weekly LAS flights.

Overall Westjet ops sees an increase of about 9 daily compared to last summer.

AC sent us another 777-300ER from YYZ, operated AC121 then AC140. If we ever get a 777 sub this summer along with the 2 daily scheduled 77W... and then KL's 777 on D concourse. Potentially awesome.

Pretty Impressive that we have surpassed a metro area 3x our size in terms of airport size. I suspect its a combination of us being an isolated city with few other travel options (no via, amtrak, etc); Westjet and AC hub; head office centre rivaling YUL; being a more ethnically diverse city percentage wise; and high incomes. Either way, for a metro of 1.3, 1.4 million or whatever to get 14 million pax a year is incredible in North America. Can't think of any other city under 2 million with those kind of numbers other than Honolulu.

MEM and SLC are two other North American cities with 1.5 million metro area population and get over 15 million pax per annum. There are a few other cities and all have a hub or Hublet fromo one of the major airlines.

I am less concerned about drop in pax on YYC-YMM and more concerned with removal of YMM from our catchment area. Especially concerned as this related to growing YYC transborder and international sun destination. Take a look at LAS market, a lot of ft Mac residence are liking the possibility of not having to drive to yeg or take a connection in yyc. That pulls away from the possibility of getting more transborder and international sun flights. Wash rinse and repeat the LAS example a few more times and the new international terminals at yeg and yyc start to look like albino elephant in the room ( to mix my metaphors).

Can anyone say explosion? 25% growth! Lol. With the latest flight announcements, that seems it will continue into the near future, too. Good for Fort Mac, the land of the roughnecks, rednecks, and rig rockets, all with a touch of Newfy accent and humor.
Of course, it wasn't long ago that YEG experienced almost 20% growth for two straight years on a much larger starting sum. Still, though, it's all relative. I'm thinking YYC and YMM (more so than YEG) will have good FY2014's.

CUN would also qualify.

At least for now WS thinks both are feasible given that they also boosted YYC-LAS. Additionally, some would argue that YYC's terminal will achieve white elephant status all by itself, no help required. Then they added MIA, lots of CUN/ZIH/ZLO etc. flying... I think we'll be able to hold YMM at bay for a bit.

One of the oilsands operators has been lobbying for a LAS flight because they consider it the most affordable point for connecting US based FIFO staff to Alberta.

Hi All,

Just to start here are some of IFP, much more to come over the next two years...let me know if you have any requests.

Nice pics, I hope the new IFP will have some viewing areas in the public spaces that is not separated by a gate transit corridor. Heck do it like in YVR where it is elevated on a mezzanine level!

Ft.Mac is doing very impressive and thanks to the new terminal and the lengthened runway, it will be sucking away some business from us or YEG for a little while. Maybe until oil drops to 1997 level lol. I'm sure we'll find some other feeder fillers to aid our growth, ahem looking at Saskachewan and NWT if any of the diamond miners are interested in going abroad..

1.4 mill give or take x10 = 14 million pax/year. Very impressive. I do love these comparisons when it is clear that this city is surely pulling 10x its own weight.
What other cities can I think of that is equivalent or equal? DXB would be the ultimate example but they are slightly bigger than us at around 1.5mills I think. Might of gone up in recent years though. How I would dearly love to stick this up the YUL legion on the Canada thread along with all those Calgary praises from NYT and Guardian.

I was also thinking are we the only city in North america constructing a new airport while calling it an 'expansion'?? I cannot think of any other city who has a large airport project underway at this time. The CFS for this month sure doesn't show any Canadian airports undergoing such expansion scale as ours..
Most that I know of are done! Heck even the world even, other than a few planned cities in China. Maybe FRA or LHR if they got thru their hurdles of NIMBYS and red tape. (Prob more so LHR). Maybe Dubai if their still working on the full buildout of the 8rwy mega world Central.

Side note: The more and more I look at our new ATC from those pics, the more I am disappointed in its design. We have a fancy modern terminal across the apron and this blandly designed monument sits across in the midfield. That bare concrete pour job along its shaft is atrocious. I'm sure quite functional but man, who was the project manager behind this at NavCan? This is supposed to be the tallest ATC in the country, surely there should be some design pedigree behind this title no? The white cladded collar is no better too, tiny little windows. Overall a huge step back from the original ATC tower of 1977..

I prefer to have my NavCan fees being reasonable, but that is me. Unless the airport is willing to pay for it, they have to keep it pretty modest.

The ATC is an almost exact twin of the new Las Vegas ATC

Amazing, how does this compare with YYZ, YVR and YUL (WS departures only).

I'd be curious to know aswell, however YUL doesn't rank very high on the WS scale as I believe it would be YEG in that third position.

I believe the ranking for WS is YYC or YYZ in the lead followed by YVR then YEG (however historically) YVR and YEG have always been neck and neck for overall departures.

YYZ has the most followed by YYC. After that I'm not sure but would thing YVR and YEG would be a close 3/4.
