Agreed. I don't remember Montreal's having one either. I wonder what the purpose of the wall is? Fire safety issues?

Maybe it allows use of a thinner liner?
But then the labour of building a wall between must be costly.

The tunnel boring machine pieces arrived at CN's Thornton Yard on some rail cars a few days ago. They were still unloading them yesterday afternoon (I got a couple of pics.. need to host them somewhere now).

I thought it was the machine for the Fraser River water tunnel project, until I saw the Translink logo on one piece.

I don't understand why they need that wall. And given the extra cost, seems like a waste of money unless there is something about it that makes it a requirement of sorts.

BTW, any updated pics of the Lougheed Station area? dpogue?

It might be for emergency egress.

In a tunnel fire you want to get downhill to get out of the smoke, but if you're trapped on the uphill side of a train on fire, then you need somewhere else to go. Separating the tunnels would allow you to get into clean air without having to walk around a train which may be on fire.

I would imagine there are doors between the two halves of the tunnel, and opening them likely shuts down traffic on both sides.

Sounds more like a beaurocratic safety requirement, much like the railing on top of Stadium/Chinatown station which serves no real purpose other than to tell the WCB to shut up.
I mean, how many times has a SkyTrain caught fire? It would be reckless for me to say "what are the odds it would happen in a tunnel?" but so long as we have electricity and points of friction there will be a remote possibility.

That makes eminent sense.

Funny you should ask

Video from this morning that doesn't really show all that much new stuff. Apologies for the grainy quality, I don't think the window of that train had ever been washed.

Videos from the train are only really good at showing stuff happening right beside the existing track. A lot of the work now is on building the columns around White Spot and North Road, and it's hard to capture that from the train because of the angles.

It's nice to see the second pic with the guy standing behind the muck access hole which shows just how big the diameter of the bore will be.

"..deliver the bottom half of the boring machine ..."
Seems like today's reporters can't be bothered to have a basic understanding of how machines work before writing a story.
Maybe some research like 'how tunnel boring machines work' on youTube ?

More likely the pics were taken by Curly & emailed to Larry & Moe back in the office where they added some snappy text to go with them.

Thanks so much dpoque! The video is fine.

The columns beside White Spot is quite large. It looks like the outbound and inbound guideways pretty much have to be in sync by the time the guideways are on top of the restaurant. I am having a hard time envisioning how the two guideways will look like between White Spot and the Lougheed Station tracks.

One thing I noticed about the columns by the White Spot etc:

The V shaped section at the top isn't tapered to match the shape of the column below it, looking ugly and lazy compared to columns seen elsewhere on Millennium/Evergreen.

Compare the column seen starting at 0:04 seconds in the video (or hopefully someone can get a nice picture of it) versus what we're used to seeing:

Making the columns pretty costs extra.
As long as the trains don't fall off the tracks and make their own 'drive thru' at White Spot, I'm OK with plain columns.

For that particular column, it shouldn't be tapered. The outbound guideway needs to rest on half of that top section, while the other half continues upward to another V section for the inbound guideway.

It should work something like this:

Interesting. Its hard to tell how the column beside White Spot differs from the rest aside from its size, but it makes sense.

Thanks.
It'll be interesting to see how the cap on that column develops
- it looks pretty symmetrical, just really chunky (but as you mention, it's hard to tell from the angle).

Bah, yesterday I took a video that showed nothing exciting, today I didn't take a video and they have a new steel guideway segment on the inbound

It looked strangely curved towards/underneath the outbound segments though, so I'm curious to see exactly what they're doing.

Wow! The hunger for video updates is simply rising. I look forward to your next footage. Its been quite a valuable source to help feed our curiousity.

The second piece of the TBM has arrived.

Maybe just to allign them to stack one above the other?
(given they said they aren't doing a basketweave)
