A dynamic new addition to MacEwan University’s City Centre Campus, the Centre for the Arts and Communications (CAC) will be a consolidated, functional and sustainable new home for the Faculty’s existing programs. Located on a major thoroughfare at the western edge of downtown Edmonton, the CAC will be an elegant entrance landmark for both the University campus and the city.

The building will house performance and educational spaces including a proscenium theatre, a recital hall, a black-box theatre, galleries and a wide range of visual arts, digital and sound studios. With state-of-the-art instructional facilities, the design emphasizes the CAC’s identity as a hub for converging ideas and social interaction. Informal learning, performance and gathering spaces are playfully woven into two main atria, which will showcase a spectrum of student, staff and visitor activities. Natural daylight will penetrate these vibrant cores, enlivening them with changing light qualities throughout the day.

The exterior is a modern, sleek curtain wall façade with wavy forms subtly referencing the image of a stage curtain, an apt metaphor for the dynamics and function of the building. Latest energy modelling techniques optimize the composition of the façade and the mechanical systems to achieve high energy efficiency, which is crucial for Edmonton’s cold winters. The building is targeted to attain LEED® Silver certification.

The proposed Fine Arts building at Grant MacEwan looks pretty cool. Another plus is that it would help to hide the student dorm building from view.

Wonder how soon we can expect that thing to start going up?

Jasper and 122/123st - They are definitely putting in shoring I beams and should be starting excavation in a week or so. Phase 2 I guess and will be tied into phase 1 UG and above.

Phase 2 is just more podium, with Phase 3 as the tower portion, correct?

^I like the tower. I do not like the podium. Poor human scale, too little retail on 101 and 104, Two Pedways! (

) And 104th Ave isn't treating the pedestrian quite right the whole way across.

A couple items might be fixed, but not the major issues I have with the podium.

104ave will always be a street for cars IMO. From 97th to 124th, it's a terrible street for anything but driving

It'll go west across 102 St to the future hotel. Which has an above ground connection (pedway or direct connection) to the Winter Garden.

No need to ever go outside in our City to get to the new arena! Big fancy plaza space outside? Who will use it when you never need to leave the conditioned environment.
