Race track closure marks end of an era for motorsport enthusiasts in Alberta

EDMONTON - A beloved race track near Fort Saskatchewan that drew sport bike, kart and formula racers and enthusiasts is closing after more than a decade in business.

Over the weekend, the Edmonton Motorcycle Roadracing Association held its last championship at Stratotech Park International Raceway. The stands were packed Sunday afternoon as friends, family members, fans and some first-timers gathered to soak up the sun, speed and say goodbye to a place they’ve grown well acquainted with.

“The track is such a big part of my life, it’s hard to see that chapter close,” said Trina Hennig, owner of Edge Motorcycle Training and a former racer. “This was my home away from home.”

Had family in town from Santiago formerly of Vancouver.

At the 104 market on Saturday. He mentioned how the city has changed since he last lived here (about 20 years). He said there was much more of a young artsy vibe similar to some Euro cities a very positive improvement. Similar comments came from family from TO.

^indeed, we just need more of it and to replicate the good parts more often and in different parts of the city.

^not at this time really no, but I would expect/hope we see shovels mid next year.

Ah yes, the former Legion site. Good addition to the area, design is a bit suburban however.

Why why why must the retail windows/ceiling be so small in this town?? I will never understand how a developer can ignore a detail that is important in attracting tenants other than Subway, Fabutan, and a Vo's Nails.

A billboard advertising Encore on Jasper and 111ish (I believe) was replaced by an ad for the Fox tower. Lol I found it funny, Langham being greasy?

I wonder with how expensive space in the core is getting here if that will make moving to Edmonton more attractive for some companies, I'd love to see you guys get a whack of new office towers!

EDMONTON - Even during the darkest days of winter, I’ve never regretted leaving beautiful Vancouver for Edmonton in 2002.

Do I miss the ocean and coastal mountains, the tulips in February, running the Stanley Park Seawall after work or skiing at Cypress Mountain on a Friday night?

Of course I do. Who wouldn’t? Vancouver is like adult Disneyland, especially if you’re rich or young and single. As a place to play, few cities can match its charms.

But I’m not wealthy, and overweight, 59-year-old guys are a rarity among the hard bodies who play volleyball at Kitsilano Beach.

Simply put, when it comes down to the kind of practical, bread-and-butter, quality-of-life issues that most of us care about, Edmonton easily trumps Vancouver as a place to live.

Looks like the Capital Boulevard/Ledge project will be another year to complete.
