Given my experiences with the way engineering is taught, I actually think this would make more sense. Alternatively, engineering could be like many other professional university programs where a certain amount of undergraduate study is required before entering. I believe it only works as it does because of a fluke in the educational and professional history. Also because it is believed that a career that is generally considered prestigious is worth nothing less than a university degree. I think engineering could fit in well in the university environment and that originally it did, but I'm not sure it does anymore. But if it isn't obvious I am somewhat disillusioned with my experience and also disillusioned with most other engineers so I may be a bit biased.

You (and others) have a misunderstanding that I think the arts are useless. They have a role to play, but the U of A is in a position where it has to cut costs. Thankfully, they are being wise about it and cutting certain arts programs that are rather irrelevant. Or are you going to tell me that Ukrainan folklore is ket to producing a "well rounded individual"? I would imagine that if faced with further cuts, they will continue find art programs that can be cut that if there wasn't outrage from overly sensitive students (spare me, they exist in every faculty) neither you nor I would even know they existed in the first place. What would you do? Spread cuts evenly across all departments? Is that better?
again, i think the misunderstanding here is not mine...

the top engineering and technology universities in the world ( http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/wo...bject-ranking/subject/engineering-and-IT ) are:

california institute of technology
massachusetts institute of technology
princeton
university of california, berkely
stanford
cambridge
oxford
university of california, los angeles
eth zurich
imperial college London
georgia institute of technology
carnegie mellon
university of texas at austin
university of michigan
cornell
university of california, santa barbara

it's no coincidence whatsoever that you see many of the same institutions at the top of both the arts and the engineering rankings... so yes, that's exactly what i would hope the u of a continues to strive to be.

You could say the same thing about a Bsc in most scientific fields.

Universities need to teach 100 people to fnd the 5 that want to do post grad research to bring in the research dollars. As much as I hate to admit it (because I bitched about it all through university), spending all the time learning the theory behind a wide variety of scientific priciples gives you the knowledge to make the best decisions. I don't need to be an expert on items like a GPS, CAD, or Proctors, but I need to know how to interpret the data and design things accordingly and take responsibility for it. That is the value of a university education. Sure, some disciplines will not require a lot of it (me not so much) but others do.

Fun afternoon. No computer at home. I'm sure tuesday will be fun.

Great write-up and looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Design is ok, not a huge fan of main, but I like some of the design elements.

It would have looked better if there were retail bays on the main I think, but this location is not suitable for retail, being on a residential street off 112th. I think you could tweak this and it would fit on 124th, 118th etc. wonderfully

Given the apalling nature of 95% of the low rise construction in the city I'd say a big step up from what's been developed to date

Not new news really. Most knew that John was positioning this to be a rental building. Although I suspect that rendering is outdated seeing that the podium design is different than what has been built.

Quebec City has 419,702 more rental apartments than Edmonton? 170,000 more than TO?

Or is it supposed to be 41,000?

Pretty sure they mixed up the Montreal and Quebec City numbers. Montreal has a monstrously large rental market, which isn't surprising given its long history and VERY tenant-friendly rent controls.

Dear Stakeholders,

The Queen Elizabeth Park Master Plan was approved by City Council on August 28, 2013. The final document will be available on the project website later this week. The master plan that has been prepared will guide the phased development of the park over the next 10 years. The realization of the master plan can be truly transformative and has immense potential to add to the vibrancy and quality of life in Edmonton.

Among the funded projects for the park is an improved crosswalk across Queen Elizabeth Park Road, to be constructed through Fall 2013. In 2014, the new accessible trail from Saskatchewan Drive down to the improved crosswalk will be constructed and old parking lot areas in the upper park will be naturalized. If funding allows then a low wall commemorating the historic significance of the park will also be installed.

Funding will be sought in the next four year capital budget cycle (2015-2018) to fund the next phase of development.

Once again, thank you for interest and involvement in the development of the Queen Elizabeth Park Master Plan.
