They have been installed fronting Jasper as a soffit of sorts for about 3 weeks now.

No, but every other Contractor/developer is able to build without blocking a sidewalk and traffic lane...Why should the Fox be exempt?

^agreed. A better compromise needs to be found, simple as that. We want them to be able to work efficiently and have their needs met, WHILE being good neighbours during construction.

Are they just blocking it while they excavate ? Or are they planning on having it blocked for the entire build out ?

I'd be pretty suprised if the city let them block a traffic lane for that long...

Precisely. Every other company seems able to find a middle ground, even in tight quarters. This location / project should be no exception.

Personally, it speaks to me a little like - "We're building, get out of our way, silly pedestrians".

Entire build out at this point. DECL has been working with the City and developer for a compromise, we should know more this week.

Umm yes, exactly.... but more like "get the fuck out of the way you stupid dumbass pedestrians, whom if I don't barricade my site off are going to stand like dazed morons starting at the twelve tonnes of steel I am swinging over your head"

So yeah.. get the fuck out of the way ;P

Well okay, I will concede that if that is the case, it is a bit extreme. But (market asside) that stretch of sidewalk is lifeless... I am sure some concession can be found

While you're rattling sabres, you should talk to Gene about his 7th st project... they're closing down the whole sidewalk as well it seems

^I wondered how they are planning to work on that site given its restrictions and very limited setback.

Fox has a huge laydown/delivery with phase 2 lands and a large setback as is with the sidewalk width.

I don't know about any of you, but I have always wondered why the contractors don't do like other cities and place the job shacks above the sidewalks, one level up. You still have a sidewalk but protect pedestrians.

^precisely! There needs to be more thought and consideration for all with these very urban sites. Compromises to ensure all immediate parties are acceptable to the final decision and agreement, that means some notification or involvement... neither of which happened here.

Welcome to the cronic problems that many, many neighorhoods have had with the P&D office. This is hardly an isolated incident.

With recent developments in our area these issues have been brought to the forefront. Who's to say if changes are forthcoming, but we are pushing, anyways

And speaking of trying situations... got a meeting with Northlands tonight. On the agenda..

1) The un-consulted removal and blockade of the multi-use path east of the LRT tracks down 115th ave & 79st
2) Long term plans for the Cromdale area around the NE health centre... working to re-populate that area that has been stripped of all residences
3) Clean-up & beautification along the flanking LRT ROW

Nice article on the Quarters in this month's Business in Edmonton Magazine. It had one interesting quote that I could not decipher. Not Dub Hotel.

"... negotiations are in place for phase 3 construction of a mixed use, comm/resi complex to be built across from the... Gibson Block'

I noticed they've been taking down signage off the strip-mall on 101 St. where the new KR is slated. The Forex on the corner is also closed now. This is giving me hope that this is going to move faster than I thought.

^ Really? That's amazing. Things really are on the upswing for our fair city's core, finally! How tall is the KR Hotel going to be, again?
