I can't remember if those buildings were within the height regulations of the area or not. If they were, I hope they'd be built in their proposed form; they're beautiful. If not, I hope something can be worked out, especially considering the buildings are replacing a run-down fire station and a hideous strip club

They are five stories, so they are probably within the height limit.
Each storey is most likely 3 metres or less on average, so it's bound to be around 15 metres.

Yay!! New Pictures!!

Fortis has started it's 10th floor, and the glass is really climbing the tower!! I can't wait to see the charcoal brick and wooden panel sections! I have a feeling that it's all going to contrast wonderfully!

That shot of 351 is spectacular! Yet a new shade I haven't seen before! It looks really dark in that lighting. I absolutely love the glass on it though! Good to see lots of work happening

Look at those buildings around the Steele Hotel.. they are absolutely horrible. It looks like a ghetto. I certainly would not want to stay in a "boutique hotel" that was surrounded by those sketchy buildings. Action really needs to be taken to insure that those buildings are torn down and that area is revitalized. Those buildings are truly repulsive.

I was thinking the same thing about the shot of the Steel Hotel site, Townie. It really is a commercial slum.

As far as we know right now, the Steele Hotel will blend right into the commercial slum..

now imagine with the deacon building and a nicer version of the hilton .. add in the re clad of the TD building (and hopefully soon Fortis building) and the henry bell development will have an impact ....

NOW..

Look at that ugly piece of crap garage that is just inducing tourist vomit on the waterfront .. and imagine it completely redone with a high end hotel on top ..

how cool will this view look with a few more towers peeking up (including some taller ones) .. looking from our past to our future XD a beautiful historic downtown and central business district .. not competing with each other but complimenting each other

I drove by The Mix lunchtime and noticed that there is now a protective walkway over the sidewalk, hopefully a sign that some exterior work will start soon...either that or the building is starting to fall apart onto the street. Let's hope it is the former, not the latter. Work on the Metropark has also picked up pace in the past few weeks too

Edit: ^ Now that I have read it all, it's quite enlightening to see the history of why things are the way they are; some of the sites mentioned were made vacant 30 years ago or more, and they are still sitting there empty, go figure.

I am now looking at the list of North America's Smartest Cities. (St. John's didn't make the list surprisingly)

I've been looking for examples of small, around the size of St. John's, smart cities. I haven't found anything yet but I have found some interesting stuff (like this) on creating smart cities. I was thinking about creating a thread that would focus on policies that we would like to see in St. John's, focusing on how to make it a better smarter city. It could be something we could do in this thread, but I thought that if a new thread was created we could eventually come up with a list of different things we'd like to see done in the city, create questions around them, and then during the municipal election we could send them out as a group to candidates to get their views.
