St. John's farmers market eyes Metrobus building

The St. John's Farmers' Market sees the Metrobus depot on Freshwater Road as a possible new home.

The idea of the market moving to the bus terminal was floated a few weeks ago by city councillor Tom Hann.

Dean Barnes, the chair of the market, likes the idea.

"The Metrobus terminal is a highly potential candidate," said Barnes.

According to Barnes, the depot has a lot of what the market is looking for.

"One of the big things is it has a large outdoor space for parking, which is an issue here and it's fairly centrally located — it's on bus routes. Also, there's a very large inside space," said Barnes.

The market started about five years ago and has been growing steadily ever since.

"We've gotten to the point now we've severely outgrown the space that we have … we've set up quite a few vendors outside. We actually need a permanent home," Barnes told CBC News.

Barnes said talks with St. John's, which got underway this week, are going well.

"The city's been very positive about this," said Barnes.

But he cautions nothing is definitive yet.

"It is a feasibility study right now — it's not a definite," said Barnes.

For its part, the city said talks are in the preliminary stages.

Wasn't the old Metrobus site slotted to become a replacement for the Mews Centre with totally new complex being built there?

So it is probably too expensive and they are already further ahead in planning the replacement of the other recreation centre

using it as the farmers market means they can use the existing building .. imagine the amount of environmental clean up being a bus depot on an old dump if they were to tear it down and build a facility with a swimming pool. Using the existing facility you will just have to clean it up and it wont disturb whatever is below the ground either

I'd like to see something similar to the condos proposed for LeMarchant on that site. We really need to extend the urban edge of St. John's. In that stretch of the city, right now it fades slowly, disappearing completely by Empire Avenue. From that point on, you could be in St. John's or Stephenville - it's NOT urban.

If we could get some taller (4+), sidewalk-fronting, residential buildings on that stretch of Freshwater... it would add a whole another block to the area that feels more like a city.

Here's an update on what I did before, a building proposals comparison, using developer's elevations adjusted to scale (these are not the SSP diagrams drawings). This time I've added the revamped Hilton, as well as Mix, to put things in perspective (without actual perspective).

I'm excited for Tiffany Towers! They will make the east end look so much more dense! Also, 16 stories would make them the highest floor count in the city. Would they likely hit the 50m mark?

Hopefully we'll hear some more on those soon because the developers were already asked to prepare a LUAR report. I don't think getting them approved will be a problem seeing how council already approved four other 10 story buildings to go there. Looking forward to this!

I would say - 2.64 m (8.66 feet floor to floor height) X 16 floors = 42.24 metres, plus a possible 3 m for mech. penthouse = 45.24 metres.
Possibly it could be more height than this if the ceilings are higher, or the floor structure takes up more space, or if there is additional height for public space on the ground floor. So, if you allow for 3 metres per floor, the height could possibly be 48 + 3, = 51m.

Though not tall, I think I am most excited by the Duckworth East - Hotel/Condo Development. I hope we hear something soon.

I agree, that's going to be a nice one once complete.

Right now the Sheraton is the only thing holding up that end of downtown. Those condos are really going to beef it up a bit.

I guess you are referring to the two building proposal with the flat iron type one that was presented months ago. Well if it looks too good to be true, it probably won't get built, at least in that form, keep hoping though.

Edit: The building in my current avatar looks like it; that is the Europe Hotel (1908) in Vancouver from my own photo.
