I just miss the days when he had dancing bananas for us!

Actually Viking I do have a real question for you. In the Canada section in a thread called 2013 Most Anticipated Projects in Your City, you posted this

"winnipeggers don't know what their most anticipated project should be yet....."

That was a day or two before you posted

"I am officially retracting my previous dancing banana."

Were those 2 the same thing?? Or are those 2 separate an we still have something awesome to look forward to?

Yeah, but you can clearly see their effects.

I think it's pretty cool, how it all works together. Although poor old Grande Pointe has to deal with the flooding. Anybody know if their situation has improved since the floodway expansion?

I do think there should be some type of control structure at the floodway inlet though. For the high water in summers, even just for more control of the river in general. Could relieve some pressure on the city and allow for some development of the riverbank. I mean things like more pathways that won't get flooded, some other public parks/spaces, food stands/booths, etc.

Wow, so much mixed news. I really wouldn't panic about it though as there are several great downtown projects on the go that ARE moving forward, and its they're not really going to provide the boost everyone is looking for until they're open. The loss of the IMAX theatre downtown is a huge blow on the 'daytime' activity list down there, but given how the entire Portage Place debacle appears to have played out, I'm not surprised. I still maintain that the SHED should eventually have some spill-over effects to Portage Place.

Or maybe it could just go bust and get bought up by the University of Winnipeg?

People need to relax a little. Viking works as an Architect for one firm. I am positive he does proposals and renderings, even full construction drawings for lots of projects that are eventually cancelled.

Maybe he can share what his percentage of cancelled versus shovels in the ground projects are.

In any event, regardless of proposals - in Winnipeg, don't ever count on the validity of a project until there is a shovel in the ground. Until then, it is never confirmed.

Downtowner to see new life as student housing

By: by Murray McNeill

Posted: 11:05 AM

The owners of Winnipeg’s India Palace have purchased the Downtowner Motor Hotel and plan to redevelop it as rental housing units for students.

Two local restaurateurs have purchased the former Downtowner Hotel on Ellice Avenue and plan to convert it into a student housing complex.

That's why I'm excited every time I pass by the Heritage Landing site. Seeing the activity there and knowing that the tower is being built, such an improvement for the area!

Speaking of, they have a fairly large hole dug and a number of piles put in.

Go drive as close as you can, the west side is out of the water as they are repairing it, also have you been there during operation, they are very visable. I grew up in the RM, I have seen them in use many many times and have seen them repaired over and over.

As for the other question, yes Grande Point has protection, that is why it is a small housing boom there, and they even have a nice industrial park, What they did was raise the railway to the south and closer to the floodway they build a dike. As for the ones on the wrong side of the dike they mostly got bought out and the land is back to nature, which is actually really nice. A few stragglers are still there but with fortifications.

I have always been surprised that they don't pump water into the floodway in the summer when dealing with high water.

If the City can pump large volumes of water at the north end sewer plant each day, I don't know why the Provence can't do the same at the floodway inlet and prevent the land south of the gates from being artificially flooded.

The floodway works entirely by gravity, there is no pumping involved. Waters from summer flooding won't flow into the floodway until the gates are raised in the river due to the floodway entrance being closed off by a berm. The berm is there to prevent winter ice from entering the floodway.

I know that is the spring operation procedure, but I was thinking in the summer when there are high water levels that could cause basement flooding and floodway gets used to try and reduce the risk.

Instead of raising the gates and flooding the market gardens etc south of the gates, pump the water to the other side of the ice block berm to get into the floodway. That way the people in Winnipeg get a lower river level and the area south of the floodway does not flood.

Water is not normally pumped downhill, and no number of pumps would make a difference in a summer flood. An inlet control structure is needed. A group of river property owners advocated for this prior to the commencement of the floodway expansion project but Doer brushed it aside.

Personally I thought it was kind of a stupid idea to begin with, the floodway has been in place since the mid 1960's and now all of sudden people need a tower to view it.

apparently there was project in the works that no one other than truviking was aware of, there was no official announcement made or rendering released. The only evidence of this project even being planned were based on a few posts by truviking. Based on truviking's excitement and enthusiasm we assumed that this would be a real game changer for the downtown, but all this anticipation and excitement was taken away after truviking later revealed that the project had been canceled. I think this really deflated everyone a bit. It was a project many of us were really looking forward to even though none of us really had any details regarding it.

Heck it cold have been a grocery store downtown...........big deal if one of 14 projects got cancelled that was never even revealed in the first place...it is time to move on to the actual projects going on in this city.

A 36-storey grocery store? Ikea wont be the biggest retail building in Winnipeg anymore, then

Why are you coping and pasting this exact same quote from the 'retail' thread here? I don't understand.....
