My thought is that if they are calling it a "boutique" hotel, it should at least look nice and not like the Capital hotel or something equally as boring.

truth is we really don't even know what the last render even looked like .. it was a not great shot in black and white .. with not much detail .. I hope this is a good project .. I just do not understand how it is that they do not have renderings out :S

I can't remember, but has anyone contacted Steele to see what the final design of the building will look like? I have a feeling that Townie has but did not hear back. If not, we should contact to see if they'll release renderings. If the building is ready for construction I can't see why this should be a problem?????

I would imagine that property is probably generating some revenue as privately owned paid-parking lot, so I would sincerely doubt anyone would turn it into a park, as nice as that sounds. I recall fantasizing about the old Woolworth's property the same way as a nice big public square when they tore it down and it was open space for some time before the office tower wax built there. But alas, its privately owned and not owned by the city so I new that was just a pipe dream to see it become a public space.

I think I recall that someone did but don't think it resulted in obtaining any further information.

Also, I am curious to know what they plan to call it.

Someone contacted council and I believe they said the design wasn't finalized and that another public meeting may need to be held before they could start. I'm going to email someone on council.

Yea you're most likely right Arrakis, got me thinking though as to how St. John's or any place goes about getting more public space.

I was interested to learn that all three major parks in St. John's Bannerman, Bowering and Pippy were donated by wealthy benefactors and that Paley Park in NYC is actually privately owned public space.

Now it's probably asking too much for the city of St. John's to turn one of their surface parking lots into non-income generating public space but maybe not for a big corporation like Fortis who is trying to get big projects built.

They could grease the wheels a little bit with a Paley Park,Fortis Park perhaps, which would up their prestige and increase the value of the surrounding properties while maybe getting a little extra height out of one of their new projects. Just a pipe dream I know.

As for the Steele hotel, very strange that nothing really has come out about what form it's going to take, how tall etc.

I also thought it was interesting that council changed the parking rules for new construction, maybe a conversation for another day

Wow, anyone catch the map showing the development where the new Empire Theaters location will be? It's massive. Albeit most of it is future development, that along with Stavanger and White Rose are going to combine to be one huge box store hurricane.

A lot of unannounced development in the coming years up that way as well. While I'm not fan of sprawl, having Kenmount / Kelsey and Torbay / Stevanger on opposite sides of the city isn't a bad idea. One services East St. John's / Torbay / LB-MC-OC, while the other services West St. John's / Paradise / PCSP / CBS (when they don't drive into the Pearl instead). Its certainly better for traffic than only having one central big box location that everyone flocks too.

Anyway, I'm back guys! While the trip was great, it was filled with constant minor annoyances including lost baggage, cancelled and delayed flights, and sickness. None the less, Costa Rica is a gorgeous country. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Anyone wanna tell me what I missed over the past week? Going through 20 pages isn't particularly tempting. I saw some of Chafe's news, just wondering if there is a major proposal or something that I absolutely need to know about ASAP.

Otherwise, Happy 2013. I missed you.
