Instead of the Gov leasing space all over the city (other than to support "supporters") they should have built another building on the east side of the Confederation Bldg (top of photo) and then built a two or three story parkade, complete with gardens and common areas to fill in between the horseshoe of buildings.

It was talked about here a couple of years ago (Mar 2011, p.112).

I haven't driven Hamilton Ave in a long time, I should drop by for a look. I hope it turns out well, the old CEI building is beautiful.

pmg I can see my house in that shot!! hahaha yeah it was approved to double the size of the building and it will be condos I believe .. they've had it boarded up for a while but it seems to have some activity now

Agreed beautiful property, hope it gets good life breathed into it.

I noticed as I was scanning google maps updated pics of St. John's that the building on the corner of Water and Bishop's cove is missing. Can't remember much discussion about this spot, any word on what will be built here?

Would be a fantastic spot to carve out some public space downtown along with that surface parking lot next to the Murray Premises.

The old fabulous 50s location? That was demolished about 2 years ago (I think it was that long?). The spot was turned in to a public parking lot and there aren't any proposals for the location. It's proximity to Murray Premises would make it a difficult place to develop unless it followed strict heritage guideline. I agree that it'd be an excellent place for a small park or something along those lines. It'd be beautiful

About time google maps was updated properly for St. John's as so much has happened in the last few years.

I wonder who owns that corner, yea a little park with movable tables and chairs would be ideal, something like Paley Park in NYC

You wouldn't need much space to create something amazing in that spot.

I believe in one of their documents the city had the Fabulous 50's site as the location for a hotel.

THAT PLACE. It has a name? I loved it there when I was in NY. Me and my girlfriend sat there and had lunch while on our way to a show. I absolutely loved how cosy it felt, and being surrounded by architecturally stunning buildings.

Construction Begins on New Downtown Hotel

There's more upbeat news for the hotel industry in St. John's.

Steele Hotels has started construction on a new 89 room Boutique hotel on the west end of Water Street. The President of Steele Hotels, John Steele, says St. John's is a hot market for expansion. He stated they want to get ahead of a number of other properties being built, or in the planning stages. Steele doesn't think some of these proposed projects will come into being. He says the hotel business in the province is proving to be an uneven business.

Steele says while St. John's is a hot market, ready for expansion, the hotel industry in Central Newfoundland, where he has a number of hotels, is a challenge, while the market in Corner Brook is okay. Steele says he is excited about the new hotel being built in St. John's as it will provide more jobs and focus on outstanding service.

how did this happen!? while EVERY other project goes through such a crazy process .. even the building with the extension next to it .. that is all out in the open and they are even recomending the materials used .... this one .. NADA.. NOTHING even talked about :S

I hope it's still the old design. The new one didn't have as many floors as this hotel is supposed to be and, while it certainly doesn't prove anything, I'm hoping that in the end it turns out to have been evidence that the old proposal is the real one.
