^^^ Unfortunately, There's more to the story than has been made public. But yes, it is a loss.

The building itself is a wreck, in many ways. I'd be suprised if they can get a permit to re-open the rooftop.

This is the site of the North West Upgrading refinery near Redwater, Alta., in October 2012. Joint venture expects approval sometime this fall for gasifying, which will convert royalty bitumen to diesel fuel.

EDMONTON - Almost two years after the provincial government agreed to refine some of its royalty bitumen locally, the $5.7 billion Sturgeon upgrader and refinery has been given the green light.

Construction on the three-year project, which is southeast of Redwater, is set to begin in the spring of 2013 and up to 3,000 workers will be needed during peak periods.

Is North West Upgrader the same as Fort Hills or is Fort Hills something larger?

Fort Hills is a Suncor site (used to be Petro Can site) north of Fort McMurray.

There seems to be a lot of site work being done Just to the North of the YEG runway and Highway 19, this appears to be to far for housing at this time. about a km or 2 north of Runway 20 along RR 252. Any Idea what is going on.

Fort Hills is a "greenfield" project due north of Shell Albian (about 80km north of McMurray). Suncor Mackay River (formerly Petro-Can) is about 50 km WNW of Suncor Voyaguer.

Thought this was worth mentioning, I haven't read cracked.com in years.. but a friend mentioned Edmonton was featured in a recent article by Gladstone writing about his time here while at the Edmonton Expo.. so I checked it out Doesn't mention the city overly but mentions trips to the AGA/Zinc and WEM.. overall pretty positive I guess.
