They appear to just be slid over a bolt that is imbedded in the sidewalk...easy to replace....but not very sturdy.

The City of Edmonton and University of Alberta want to turn existing gallery space in the old Hudson’s Bay building on Jasper Avenue and 102nd Street into gallery and program space to showcase Edmonton-area artists.

EDMONTON - Downtown gallery space in the Enterprise Square building on Jasper Avenue will become a visual arts hub that promotes local talent if city councillors approve the project during budget talks.
The city would spend about $720,000 over the next three years to kick-start the project that should become self-sustaining as it develops other revenue sources, the community services committee heard Tuesday. Other organizations would also contribute money or in-kind services to establish Enterprise Square Galleries, including about $1.2 million from the University of Alberta.

EDMONTON - Edmonton’s old neighbourhoods need young families to keep their schools full of children and to create ready customers who spend at local businesses. But land prices are far cheaper on the outskirts. Young families can get more house for their dollar as a result, so the lure of the suburbs will pull new homebuyers in that direction.

What’s needed is affordable new, single-family homes in the inner city, and that’s why homebuilders such as Paul Schaefer, 35, of Urbanhaus and Tegan Martin-Drysdale, 33, of Redbrick, are pushing for more changes to Edmonton’s revamped zoning bylaw, which is going before council in January.

Plan calls for more green again in Churchill Square

EDMONTON - Large swaths of Churchill Square will be filled with trees and city centre festivals will shift onto 99th Street, if city planners have their way.

There would be a park north of City Hall, where the post office parking lot is now. The avenue between City Hall and Churchill Square would also be torn up, and the Three Bananas Cafe would be bordered with a strip of green tree canopy to the north and west. A green connection would continue south down 99th Street to the river valley.

Planners presented the ideas at a public open house Tuesday, suggesting the makeover can be accomplished over the next 10 to 20 years in connection with the new street-level LRT station, renovations to the library and other work.

“My suspicion is it will be done sooner than people think without reallocating money,” said Diana Gerrard, landscape architect with Toronto-based GH3 and consultant for the $500,000 master plan.

I think that's a load of crap. There are lore lots of young families moving into older neighborhoods who don't stay only because they want/need a bigger house for their growing families. Nobody moves out because they desire a garage in the front instead of the back.

If builders construct larger homes on these small lots that suit the character of the neighborhood, younger families will move in and stay. The position of the garage is irrelevant

Y'know, I've never really given much thought about the Saville Centre at South Campus. I heard a few here say thought it was ugly, other's never remarked about it. Time for me to remark about it. It fits given where it is, right beside the University Farm. It looks like a tractor shed - it wouldn't surprise me if there was a hopper and auger connected to the side of it.

In my head, I've started calling it the Wheat Pool.

Planning for development near present and future LRT stations
The City of Edmonton is nearing the final phases of planning for the areas within walking distance of the McKernan/Belgravia LRT station and the future Mill Woods LRT station.

The third in a series of public workshops on what transit oriented development could look like around the two stations will be held November 7 and 8, 2012.

Mill Woods Station Area Plan
Date: Wednesday, November 7, 2012

McKernan/Belgravia Station Area Plan
Date: Thursday November 8, 2012

“After a year of consulting with residents,” says Erik Backstrom, Senior Planner with Sustainable Development, “we now have draft station area plans for how these two areas should develop over time.”

“We have reached a stage in our planning where we want people’s input before we finalize them for City Council’s approval.”

When completed, the plans will determine the location and design of new housing, employment and retail as well as streets and parks that may develop near the stations in the future.

The goal of transit oriented development is to create attractive, livable and compact neighbourhoods where more people walk, cycle and use transit. The draft station area plans ensure that appropriate development takes place that respects the unique character and history of the neighbourhoods around the stations.

That is the old Boots and Junction building. The roof up there was closed years ago as it needed work I heard.

Also very UNFORTUNATE that The Junction had to essentially die for this new space to exist. But alas!
