Cops dont prevent that kind of random violence.

However 50lbs and a foot taller + the ability to stagger your punches do deal with the problem adequately!!

^^ & ^^^ you guys are absolutely right, 99% of these guys are harmless, in fact having now been working downtown for several years, I've even got know a few of the colorful characters that hang around our complex... they're not bad people.. they've just found themselves in unfortunate situations and don't have a lot of opportunities or resources to help themselves get better. I wasn't in Alberta during the Klein cutbacks, but I do believe that a lot of these folks should be in some level of guardianship... unfortunately we seem to have closed a lot of those facilities down.

After our confrontation he got up, made some bizarre and unexplainable (threatening type ?) gestures, kinda pranced around for a bit then walked into the middle of 100st again screaming incoherently... busses and cars are slamming on their brakes and honking.. they guy seemed completely oblivious as he almost got pasted a few times while zig zagging across rush hour traffic towards city hall. It was very surreal

We have a very safe city... Icertainly don't mean to imply otherwise. And yes this was all just a really wierd random circumstance... I did call the cops, just to report it and give a description..

I just filled out the survey for the Civic Precinct Master Plan

I had two main concerns/comments:
1. how pedestrian/LRT crossings were going to be handled, esp during festivals
2. how exactly they were going to connect the 99 St spine to the river valley, given the fact that there's a steep uphill climb plus the Marriott hotel blocking the way.

That has more to do with the expanding view of charter rights at the time than cutbacks alone. It has certainly taken much time to adapt to new ways of doing things.

New city plan would turn pavement back into park

The city's new plan for the area in and around Churchill Square calls for much of the pavement to be turned back into a park.

Festivals would shift from the square to fill 99th Street instead - making more of it available for activities like ping-pong and chess.

The details are part of designs being presented Tuesday at an open house at the Alberta Art Gallery.

The exhibit is open from 11: 30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with formal presentations at 12: 15 p.m. and 4: 30 p.m.

Students not yet born will be paying off the new fitness and climbing centre at the University of Alberta, but Ash-lyn Bernier hopes the facility means as much to them as the current cramped quarters mean to her.

Some days she can't even find a spot on the floor for her exercise mat as she tries to keep fit while studying and serving as the president of the Graduate Students' Association...

Signs for pedestrians downtown are "extremely confusing and incoherent," a city planner says.

Edmonton's downtown signs were called "confusing and incoherent" Monday, but councillors fear a proposed $2-million solution will lead the city to unneeded spending.

"You're talking three years in which you spend $2 million, and only in the last year do you put signs up. It just doesn't seem logical to me," Mayor Stephen Mandel said.

"I can't believe there aren't a huge number of people who can do this around the world. ... Just copy somebody."...

Looks like a bunch of the granite bollards on cap blvd got hit last week. Not sure if it was graders or tools who cant park. either way it's not the first time they have been damaged and i'm guessing this is going to be a problem that doesn't go away.

CALGARY — Calgary and Edmonton have displaced Toronto and Vancouver as the top-ranked cities for real estate, according to the Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2013 report released Tuesday.

The report, by PwC and the Urban Land Institute, said the Canadian real estate market is expected to remain steady with “modestly good” investment and development prospects across most property sectors for 2013, reflecting expectations of solid supply and demand.

Calgary was the top-ranked city in the country followed by Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa.

As outlined by the PDFs I presented yesterday, I find it unfortunate that this is not receiving more support. It is so desperately needed and seemingly perfectly timed given the Leg grounds, arena, 108st, RAM, new jasper ave etc.

$2M for a comprehensive downtown way-finding system seems like quite a good long term investment IMO.

Sure you could put it out to RFP or RFEI and save a little money, but at the end of the day I think this is a much better approach. Partner with a local signage firm and be done with it.

I was a little worried about those given that they match snowbanks so damn well. I suspect they are not that cheap to replace either. Hopefully this is simply the awkward years that will be reviewed and resolved.
