Just noticed Black Star's post in the photo thread of the excavator at Beth Shalom. Did not know this project if underway; that's great news! Jasper is really changing in the Oliver area.

I see that the Quarters hotel site is all fenced off, an excavator is on site and some preliminary ground work has started.

Phase 1 of the Edgewater project is at lockup, and phase 2 is just about at grade.

The Norwood village project already has three stories above grade on the south end of the site

EDMONTON - Almost seven years after the city approved a Malmo Plains seniors’ project, the community is fighting a new development proposed for the site that would be twice as big.

Westcorp Developments Inc. was allowed, despite strong local opposition in January 2006, to build a 250-unit complex, including a 16-storey apartment tower, on a 2.5-hectare property near 51st Avenue and 117th Street.

But the market changed and the scheme never went ahead. Now, Westcorp is applying to erect 508 units for families and seniors in four apartment buildings up to eight storeys high and seven 3 1/2-storey townhouses.

Wow! My former neighbours on 49th Ave. are going to blow up over this development. The original proposal had half the number of units as the new one, all of which were designated for seniors (independent living/assisted living/nursing home). Originally, the 49th Ave plan was for 7-8 semi-detached houses, but the new proposal will mean 8-10x more units for the street.

Had the residents not opposed the original development (of which I was not opposed), I wonder if the approval process would have been hastened and the project actually started before the economic slow-down. The NIMBYs were out in full force, but I think they may have unwittingly caused the project to morph into something that they'll find even more undesirable. Frankly, the original proposal was the best possible outcome for the neighbourhood and I was floored when it was opposed by so many.

Mayor Stephen Mandel still isn't happy with Commonwealth Stadium upgrades proposed for the Women's World Cup of Soccer even though the budget has been cut almost in half.

Officials had recommended spending $20.7 million to expand the southwest corner of the building and rehabilitate the stadium itself, an amount Mandel earlier this month called "staggering."..

That Malmo Plains project is going to be interesting....I know if I had the money laying around one of the parcels of land I would be all over is the old mall site on the corner of 51st ave and 122 street just a few blocks away. It is so prime.

I can agree with him on this. The stadium just underwent a huge renovation. The dressing rooms and attached rec centre is best in Canada. The Women World Cup will be maybe 3 games. I am sure they can make it work within the existing dressing rooms and recreation centre.

From the article:

The city has now reduced the price to $10.7 million.

That would create four dressing rooms, player medical rooms, referee areas and doping control rooms, replace the Jumbotron and centre-field speakers, and repave two parking lots.

The player and official facilities are required by FIFA, the international soccer governing body, for the 2015 women's championships and possibly the Under-20 Women's World Cup in 2014.

Following the soccer event, they would be converted to a change room for visiting CFL teams and other space, a report says.

The Jumbotron and the speakers are both about a dozen years old and becoming outdated, so they will need to be replaced around the time of the soccer tournaments anyway, it says.

But Mandel questioned Monday why the stadium upgrades need to be so expensive.

"It doesn't make me any happier. I have a problem with it ... We have tremendous facilities at Commonwealth (recreation centre) that we just built. I'm not sure why we can't use them," he said.


This has little to do with the new fieldhouse and rec centre. As noted in the article, there are a variety of upgrades that are needed. Mandel is out to lunch on this one... why's he being a cheapskate all of a sudden ?
