^Interesting!! Maybe this has something to do with the "Westrich Corp. coming soon" sign I saw on 105 ave?

Winspear expansion
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/business/Winspear+poised+spread+wings/7427849/story.html

Quote:
EDMONTON - The Winspear Centre helped change the face of downtown Edmonton when it opened in 1997.

Now the performing arts centre is preparing for an encore — an expansion that would turn a parking lot on the building’s east side into a 400- to 600-seat hall, studio and support space.

Besides more than 40,000 square feet of cultural expansion space, the new development is also expected to house a mixed-use facility for commercial, residential or hotel uses. What goes in the space depends on the developer which eventually partners with the Winspear.

The Francis Winspear Centre for Music has put out a call for developers to submit expressions of interest for the expansion through a public-private partnership (P3). Developing the centre’s back end was first proposed about four years ago as part of the centre’s strategic plan.

RE: Winspear - Looking forward to this one. An arts hotel or artist loft would kick arse.

Ouch, but true

Quote:
EEDC: "On a scale of 10, we're one and a half"

Some harsh words from the head of Edmonton Economic Development Corporation on how our city is performing when it comes to trying to attract people here to invest.

CEO Brad Ferguson offered a blunt statement to a question from Councillor Amarjeet Sohi.

"How much are we known to the world that we have all these advantages, and that we're open for business and it's great to invest in the capital region?" Sohi asked during a meeting of council's executive committee which was reviewing Edmonton's economic development game plan.

"On a scale of ten, we're a one and a half," replied Ferguson.

"I'm not going to sugar coat that at all. We have a long way to go to put our brand on the map, and then to have it align with something that differentiates us. 'Why do you come here? Why do you build your family here? Your career, your home, your life, your opportunity, your vacation?' We have a long way to go in positioning the city."

When comparing Edmonton's economy and business opportunity, he says the time is right to act now, especially with the world economy struggling.

Arts centre proposed downtown

Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

A performing arts centre being proposed beside the Epcor Tower should anchor a "cultural spine" along a 99th Street shopping district, organizers say.

The centre would feature a covered galleria courtyard surrounded by retail, commercial and cultural activities north of 103A Avenue, performing arts centre foundation chairwoman Dianne Kipnes says. There would also be theatres and possibly community and educational spaces, she said...

Had a chance to drive around town yesterday. I have to say there is a lot of construction going on, more than gets mentioned on this thread. When you make the turn onto Jasper ave from 124st and see the 2 cranes right away and the possibility of seeing a third in the coming month’s along that same few blocks is quite exciting. 108st is starting to look good. But the fed building site is so far behind I feel it will be another full construction season before we see the end of that. The addition to the Science Centre is unremarkable. Then you come across the Jasper Place Library and realise that there is the possibility for some exciting new architecture. The light industrial construction is making quite a dent in the land to the northwest. I also noticed that Qualico has put up a new project sign on the old Goldenwest Golf Course site. Maybe this development is finally moving forward.

Shitty for the jasper/82 street development, I like the design IMO. Crap location though, should move it to the quarters.
