City can redevelop airport land without redeploying helicopters

Edmonton Police Service's Air 2 and other helicopters could use a small piece of the City Centre Airport without disrupting plans for an innovative, sustainable community, argues reader Richard Albert.

In its single-minded effort to erase all vestiges of the City Centre Airport, city council has shown an astounding lack of common sense.
The latest example is the need to now find a new base for the Edmonton Police Service helicopter unit.
If council had chosen to retain just a small portion of the airport property for helicopter use, all of the current heli operators - most importantly STARS air ambulance, the police service's Air 1 and Air 2, and the occasional RCMP helicopter flight - could have been accommodated at minimal additional cost. Or most certainly for only a fraction of the tens of millions of dollars needed to buy land and equip new facilities for all of these operations...
