Attached to the existing Frank Kennedy Centre directly north in the parking lot.

Yes, he is a real treat. If you ever talked to him he will make sure to tell you how much money he made last year and how many cars he owns.

You don't even have to talk to him - he's written a book about how successful he is.

the met still doesnt have a building permit and its a month away from being finished.

^it's pretty ridiculous.

I makes you wonder the point of all the scrutiny by the city over building plans in the first place - If by the time the project is done and they haven't even finished with the permit.

The city should just give things a quick once over, check that all the stamps are there, make sure all city specific issues are cool, and sign off. The city doesn't take responsibility or do inspections for commercial projects in any event.

It is sad that something so fundamental to the growth of downtown can't get a permit, while the Stadium proposal by Shindico is flying through City Council without any halts. It is going to be ground floor parking now. That should look wonderful.

Its actually not so bad; maybe a grade or two better than surface parking. The IKEA Coquitlam required under-building parking since the lot was too small to support a massive parking lot (theres also a parking structure attached as well.

http://www.google.ca/imgres?um=1&hl=en&c...tart=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:0,i:105

(Imagine all that stadium site potential lost to 20% target, 80% parking).

Anyways, I am really curious about this $20M promise to improve traffic flows... I'd really like to see what they are proposing to do to the Polo Park road network. I'd like to see a complete rebuild-repave of St. James, with long left and right turn lanes added wherever possible, 3-laning of Empress, with centre lane for left turns, (4-laning may not be possible given the creek), and left / right turn lanes added wherever possible elsewhere.

Unless the proposal has changed, the sea of parking should be enough to sustain people without the removal of any at grade access to a retail outlet.

Sorry, I am still really bitter that a) this development is going up after seeing what could have gone up with the residential (despite it being a pipe dream), and b) that Shindico is heading this garbage only makes it worse, considering they ruined the gravesite of our previous sports complex.

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with the idea of a Super Target, it is the lack of developed space that gets me. This is going to be the site of our old stadium in the heart of the biggest retail district - and probably extremely valuable piece of land - in the Prairie's. Surely a more "World Class" (as they say) design could have been made.

Does it surprise me that Shindico got it? Nope. Because it seems any procuring of land is followed by that bloody name....

Anyways to lighten up the mood here is a pic from me. Sorry it is in the Construction thread, but lets face it, that is where all the traffic is.

Is 20M enough to do all of that?

Nope. Definitely not... which is why I want to see what we're ACTUALLY going to see for $20M.

The lpan that was publicly announced always called for a store over ground floor parking. Some people just misread the site layout. The ground level site plan showed parking at the proposed Target site. The second level plan for the site showed the store. Some people, especially on here, thought incorrectly it was a single level of underground parking with a ground level store.

I don't wanna sound rude here, but what is your point? It is a crappy development regardless of whether the ground floor parking was originally intended or not. Sea of parking, More parking within the building itself, and as few buildings as you can possibly fit on an 8 acre site. While other cities are doing their best to make developments unique and inspiring (including retail), Winnipeg is just saying, "How cheap", and "that's good enough for me".

Note I am not referring to all developments, just ones that include the actual municipal government, and obviously Shindico.

I certainly do...U of M still has a while to get to the level of other Canadian Universities, but new programs and development opportunities done right will help it shine. The golf course is a huge opportunity. It opens up a lot of space for the campus. At least they are moving forward.

Would be nice if Lloyd Axworthy was their headmaster...he's done some great things, and continues to do so, for U of W during his tenure there

True, but it certainly helped matters for the UofW that they had various projects at the "shovel ready" stage, and managed to qualify for the federal stimulus funding.

On another note:
Just saw this on the twitter feed on the Winnipeg Free Press Site.

@cdegurse: Just announced: 1140 Waverley St. will be turned into 2 level, interactive laser tag arena called LaserTopia, opening spring 2013.

A Polo Park shuttle service would be nice... help to keep some cars off the roads.

An example of a development that should be happening at the Polo Park site, at least something like this. Although the UofM would look great with similar additions at the New Stadium/Golf Course!

It's not the kind of area. I don't know what some of you expect, really.
