The Edmonton police department is under pressure to find a new base for its fleet of aircraft as city council forges ahead with plans to redevelop the City Centre Airport lands.

The police department has operated its fleet from the municipal airport since first acquiring a fixed-wing plane more than 25 years ago, and then expanded operations at the airport when it purchased two helicopters, the first in 2001 and the second in 2008...

I don't know, why not keep a heliport up in the corner by NAIT and Yellowhead for now?

Edmonton indoor velodrome rolls ahead

EDMONTON - Edmonton could become the first Canadian city with an indoor velodrome, after a council committee recommended Tuesday spending $8.5 million to design the project.

The facility, intended to replace the crumbling outdoor Argyll velodrome, would be part of a $97-million Coronation Park recreation centre that would also include a jogging track, fitness centre and link to Peter Hemingway pool.

“This is a project that I’m really passionate about. It’s really important to see it done,” said Tara Whitten, an Edmonton member of the bronze-medal winning women’s pursuit team at the London Olympics.

“I just know the impact it can have on the community, from young kids to elite athletes and families.”

Whitten has had to do much of her training in Los Angeles, which now has North America’s only indoor 250-metre cycling track, but said she and other Canadian racers would love to be able to train in Edmonton.

The facility might also attract competitors from other countries, particularly triathletes, because nowhere else in North America has indoor cycling, swimming and running, said David Embury of the Argyll Velodrome Association.

Big price tag to turn yellowhead trail into freeway
Undertaking could top $800M, but is a necessity: transport chief

Marty Klinkenberg
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

It could cost more than $800 million to unclog congestion on one of Edmonton's key east-west thoroughfares.

A long-term plan for transforming the Yellowhead Trail into a freeway was submitted to councillors on Tuesday, with estimated costs ranging from $687 million to $823 provided the project is undertaken in the near term. Time and inflation could drive up the cost to $1.1 billion over 15 years, councillors were told...

Edmonton office space filling up

Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Demand for office space in Edmonton was slow in the third quarter, but it was one of the few markets to see a positive turnover, according to a new report by Cushman and Wakefield.

The commercial real estate firm's national office trends third-quarter report said Edmonton had modest absorption - space leased after deducting space vacated - of about 11,700 square feet. The downtown office vacancy rate fell slightly to 7.4 per cent in the third quarter from 7.5 per cent in the previous three months...

Apartments, condo construction keeps housing starts hot: report

Bill Mah
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

The pace of housing starts in the Edmonton census metropolitan area picked up in September, due mainly to an increase in construction of apartments and condos, says the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Builders began working on 1,304 homes in the Edmonton region, up from 820 a year earlier, the federal housing agency said Tuesday...

I don't understand the opposition to the Dub building by the Valley tower residents... Valley tower sits almost at the top of the hill, the proposal is down near the bottom. What view are they concerned about losing ??.. the view of 98th ave ? The view of the empty fields of Rossdale ?

149th north of Yellowhead is a pretty minor road. Could likely cut the cost way down by simplifying that intersection and closing the level rail crossing while increasing capacity into that industrial area from the St. Alberta Tr. and 156th St.

It's my understanding that businesses are still using that rail spur that crosses the Yellowhead east of 149 St.

Driving on 105th ave just a block east of the zen condos, there's a sign on a fence saying "westrich corp. Coming soon". Anyone have an idea what that is?

I think that area of downtown (south of Jasper / Bellamy hill) is really due for a new condo tower. I wish the Raintree went through, that tower was hawt.
