Yes they could, but they're not willing to foot the cost to do so.

Because it was very expensive. Most developers would have made the same decision.

But they can make the building look much nicer.

Even if they made it into a straighter "L" shape or something (higher at 108 street, and set back on the podium away from the corner of Jasper and 109), it might still be an odd-looking shape, but it would not look so horrifyingly malformed.

Nice summarization of the many projects underway downtown, from the Sun no less!

I was up in Edmonton last week, and used the beautiful days to walk and travel around the city looking at the projects. Here are a few shots.

Federal Building looks good, even though it's taking forever.

108 Street looks better, but I find the effect underwhelming.

The Alberta Hotel is nearing completion and looks great.

Station Pointe ground work. Too bad they turned Fort Rd. into a quasi-freeway with six lanes of traffic.

A nice duplex at 84 St. and 117 Ave. I wish they would allow more of these in mature areas. Great way to increase density and keep housing affordable. Vancouver's doing a lot of it.

Within a two block radius of my house in Inglewood, there are 3 duplex/triplex infills underway that all started less than half a year ago. And I've seen many more around the area.

Nice, but I would be hesitant in saying it's booming. It's growing, nicely (sic properly). I think we have a long way to go before we can call it a "boom".

Still good press though

I'll take growing nicely, sustainably over boom/bust any day of the week.

I drove down to the family cottage on Bridge Lake BC (about an hour north of Kamloops) on thursday... The amount of freight being shipped to Edmonton and the north is purely astounding. We passed probably 10 Atco shacks, another 10 loads of heavy equipment tires, about 60-70 semi loads of of tube and plate steel (cheap chinese steel coming in at Vancouver I assume), giant valve assemblies.. etc etc... all of it headed to industry in northern Alberta... Hundred upon hundreds of semis and millions of dollars worth of materials. Unbelievable.

Council set to make decision on Commonwealth Stadium renovations

By Karen Kleiss, Edmonton Journal
October 8, 2012 5:21 PM

EDMONTON - City leaders will decide Tuesday whether to recommend spending more than $20 million to renovate Commonwealth Stadium in preparation for the 2015 Women’s World Cup of Soccer.

A report submitted to the community services committee recommends spending $12 million to expand the southwest corner of the building and $8.7 million to rehabilitate the stadium itself...

Airport development means fleet must move

Mariam Ibrahim
Edmonton Journal

Monday, October 08, 2012

The Edmonton police department is under pressure to find a new base for its fleet of aircraft as city council forges ahead with plans to redevelop the City Centre Airport lands.

The police department has operated its fleet from the municipal airport since first acquiring a fixed-wing plane more than 25 years ago, and then expanded operations at the airport when it purchased two helicopters, the first in 2001 and the second in 2008...

CKUA packs its bags and checks in at Alberta hotel
Province chips in $5M to help pay for broadcaster's new home

Marta Gold
Edmonton Journal

Monday, October 08, 2012

CKUA, which will begin broadcasting from its new home in the restored historic Alberta Hotel on Oct. 15, has received a funding boost of $5 million from the provincial government to help pay for its new space.

The move by the broadcaster, which marks its 85th year on air next month, was celebrated Saturday at a reception in the sunny park just west of the building, at 9804 Jasper Ave. Longtime CKUA DJ John Worthington delivered the ceremonial first recording to the new building, a 1927 compilation of the greatest big band hits from that year. The rest of the station's massive collection of about 1.5 million pieces of music will follow later this year...

I noticed it as well, last month. Every third truck had steel pipe. The border crossings were busy as well. Lots of product that looked like it was heading north, crossing. When you realize that almost all of it funnels onto 63, then seeing 63 at Grassland you are blown away.

Th limiting factor to development will be the CRU $/sq.ft. lease rates. They will be much higher than normal to pay for the higher level of design and maintenance in the public realm, thus limiting the potential retailers. (Either that or scrap some of the public realm components to keep costs down).

^Depends on how they 'Cameron' developed their proforma. The Currents includes a higher calibre of landscaping and hardscaping throughout the entire project. The costs to construct and maintain these are likely spread throughout the project versus a phase-by-phase basis.

Noticed over the last couple of weeks, demolition is continuing on the Molson site. It appears the 1960s section is comming down.
