I really do believe that we have reached the tipping point where people like this who have spent all their adult lives in affleuent suburban neighbourhoods see the benefits of such a lifestyle. I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see the kind of massive change calgary went through 2006-2008.
I've always looked at the cycles and how things (trends, styles, music, real estate) flow through the different cities.... seems like there's always a lag between what happens in Vancouver and what happens in Calgary, and a similar (but maybe somewhat elongated) lag between what happens in Calgary and what happens in Edmonton. If things flow the way they typcially do.... I think you might be on the money with that prediction, as 2012-2014 would be right around the typical lag (+/- 6-8 years)

Which locations? They have the main HQ on 112 St north of Jasper Ave, and the red building attached to Bell.

I found out the other day that one of our contractors pre-purchased three units in Ultima as investment properties. I am curious to see what the ratio is of owner occupants vs. inverstors are buying in.
I think that there are a number of investors who bought into Ultima. This is a similar trend we've seen in Toronto, Vancouver and to a lesser degree Calgary with these types of buildings...I also think that this trend will continue.

They are in a number of buildings. Plus with over 1000 staff locally they could fill a few floors.

Peter Kageyama talk last night in the 'Start Up' Edmonton space was well attended and quite informative. He spoke about being engaged and attached to where you live, regardless if that is downtown or in the burbs.

Ultima is taking out one ugly and bumpy gravel lot. Can't remember is fox lot is gravel or not but very important to develop nonetheless. Slowly but surely! Edmonton's gravel lots will be a thing of the past.

Apparently not... there was a study of 40,000 Americans and only 29% said they were 'engaged or involved' with their city.

Fox will be taking out a gravel lot (along with the unfortunate "decorative" fencing). Hopefully the similar fencing at Jasper and 102 is next.

do you mean this "decorative fencing":

http://www.theworks.ab.ca/placesfolder/tour/pages/009.html

from the above link:

"Artwork Description: Drawing on the awesome inspiration of the Northern Lights, this sculpture represents the endless human capacity to innovate. It is a quality embodied in Syncrude’s Aurora Mine, the catalyst for "Aurora’s Dance". As well, it depicts our potential to conceive, design and apply advanced technologies in many fields of human endeavor."

syncrude was the piece's "sponsoring partner".

the rest of the "piece" is on 102 street south of jasper.

i would happily arrange for another home for either/both if they need it and throw in some of the TLC they currently need.

^ Another case of art and context not jiving. Just because the context is wrong doesn't invalidate the artwork itself. (Same goes for the "pipes" at Jasper & 109)

I'd love to see these mounted to the alley-facing sides of buildings, perhaps in the Alley of Light just north of Jasper.

Canadians and Americans are different in many regards

It's pretty clear that many, many people in our city are engaged in their communities.
