I just got word that the demo crew at the Cromdale site has found some interesting artifacts which are being turned over to the community league... an't wait to see what's been found!

Be interesting to see what is on the Video cameras. Even the museum cameras should show something.

So you're calling the owners of Roast stupid ? Wow, that's not very nice. I wouldn't expect you to know anything about the history of the establishment and what it's meant to Edmonton over the years... that would be asking a lot from you, but I guarantee the Roast folks do.

Whatever, it's not that big a deal but it's still slimy, you can be an apologist all you want but it doesn't make it right.
Ha, please show me where I called the owners of Roast "stupid"....exactly.

Given that Roast is a different word than Roost, is not a GLBT bar / club, that the logo is not exactly the same, and that The Roost is now closed, I'd say that it's far from being 'slimy' or 'opportunistic'...

^ your implication that it's a coincidence would infer that you think the owners are stupid.... they certainly know the logo and where they "borrowed" it from, even though you didn't.

Again, apologize all you want, it's still very close... far too close to be any sort of coincidence. I won't expect you to understand why people are irked, but you can stop making a bunch of excuses for a ripped-off marketing logo... something that meant a lot to the community that "owned" it... and now get ripped off by some "trendy" coffee place right next door. Sorry, but that's slimy.

^ If it's such a problem, why doesn't the Roost camp sue?

^ Maybe it's possible that the Roost's original owner can't afford to file a lawsuit. Remember that suing someone else costs money - lots of money. Not to mention that it can get even more expensive for the person filing the lawsuit if things don't go his/her way.

Same. In fact, I remember The Roost well, and never would have made that connection. And that "connection" looks and sounds tenuous at best. To me, anyway.

I have partied at the roost many times and could not for the life of me describe the symbol. Yes it was a great club, but I'm sure very few people hold it in such high esteem as you do. Get your panties out of a knot and get over it... Coincidence. End of story. Unless you do in fact know the owners of roast were part of the roost community and knew what they were doing... Sounds like some one is desperately trying to hold on to the glory days and make the self feel much more important then they are...

The resemblance between the two logos is pretty uncanny, to the point that I actually misread it as 'Roost' for the first week or two after the sign went up... that said, who cares?
I'm also confused as to who you're referring to when you mention the 'original owner' of the Roost, as Dow passed away years ago now.

^^ Lol... you guys. Such appologists.

I did not frequent the Roost, but know many, many who did. Many who were there in the glory days, probably when you were still sucking your mom's teat. There is a lot of history there, and I am sorry but since we all cry and wail when some dumpy old building gets knocked down, yet when an institution that help shape a portion of Edmonton's history gets plagiarized we think that's fine because it's some "hip" coffee shop... well that's a sad double standard.

^ Dow's original partners from what I heard. Dow bought them out some time ago.

I fail to see how having signage that resembles the logo of a nearby bar that no longer exists (whether the resemblance is intentional or not) is comparable to tearing down an historic building. At best I'd call it an homage, at worst a coincidence.
For someone who didn't even frequent the damn place you really ought to get your panties unbunched.

^ You sure know a lot about panties for a guy who hung out at the roost

My party days were done a long time before I moved here in 2004.. by that time the Roost had become the haunt of 18 year old girls and their terrified BF's anyways so I think I went there twice before it closed... but chatting with some older friends who remember the days that it was a private club, and along with Flashback and Boots virtually shaped the underground scene in Edmonton to one that was widely known to be one of the best at the time.. and it represents to a lot of folks, who yes, may be still clinging to some former glory, to be more than just another bar that came & went and whose lives were shaped by going to these places that allowed them to be who they were, in an otherwise inhospitable city (back in the day)

Look at the scene now. Horrorific. Once Junction closes, for the first time in a long time Calgary will actually have a better gay nightlife than Edmonton, which is pretty sad.

I had actually seen the big R and didn't put it together, but a lot of folks think it's very disrespectful, and I respect and understand their point of view, becuase to me it's a pretty obvious knock-off

The Graffiti attack at Government House is now being reported to the police as a hate crime. I have photos but they are not worth publishing.

Interesting though the media is not reporting it.

I dunno....I use to go to the Roost back in the day, my best friend use to DJ upstairs. Im not offended at all.. and I know for sure DJ lefty would not care what so ever on a new coffee house or whatever it is having a logo or name that is similar!!

To me its a reflection of what kind of impact it had on the Entertainment scene in Edmonton.

Govt house vandals...

Not everyone agrees with you...including some of the "community members" you refer to...so get a grip. Go into Roast Coffee and Wine Bar, have a coffee or glass of wine and meet the staff. Were pretty sure you will see some of those "community members" you allude to working happily at Roast.
