The rental market is really hot in Edmonton right now.

I know of one really large property management firm from the east that is currently and actively seeking development opportunities in Edmonton for rental apartments

I would expect something very similar if not the same. If I recall Central was in the 18-22 range.

^ I am EXTREMELY disappointed to hear about this with the Mayfair - the South tower was not designed to peek out behind the North tower.

Really not impressed with the developer on this one - The North building is the more important of the two - if anything the South tower should have been cut, but I guess huzzah for Federal Funding.

It will take a LOT for me to feel confident of this developer in the future. They sold everyone on a unique and distinctive strucutre on a prominent DT corner, and have dropped the ball.

^but it is how they recover no? Procura has significant interests in this area and have demonstrated with 10830 they are here to play ball.

It will still be ~460 units and ~600 people along with considerable retail on the main, not to mention two more parking lots gone.

I hope the architect can rescue this as it is a very prominent corner.

Mind you, I am not all that impressed with the south tower's unveiling.

It is better than the rendering, by a long shot. That might have to do more with the low quality of the rendering iirc, or the pleasant surprise of reasonable materials not stucco not the actual qualities of the building however.

I previously stated the windows (size) are a real letdown. Not sure they even open. Stifling if they don't. Btw who was the design architect (name not firm)? - albeit a decision like that rested with Procura.

So design was by Evans...a very good designer. I suppose a good designer can be made to look bad (the design) by the client/owner that changes course or starts to VE. You would not want to have a repeat project with such a client/owner as it could damage your reputation and that of the design firm. One would think.

I am glad the windows open, and you can peak out of the small windows...at least that is something.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I drove by today I threw up in my mouth a bit. And I absolutely have a hard time seeing the marriage between south and north. I would like to be wrong. My ex says I am all the time!

It's better than a parking lot but I'm VERY disappointed. I agree that having the South tower sticking up will look bad. Hopefully the new design will be able to address it somehow.

In other news, I heard from a friend that The Quest is having major problems already with water leakage from its roof into the penthouses. Can anyone corroborate?

I feel like freaking out every time I hear that comment.

Don't people realize that a parking lot will only be around for a few years, but a crappy project will sit around for generations?

I wouldn't say it's a crappy project, just less than we were expecting. All in all, I don't mind it (except, perhaps, the colours and the reduced height bombshell). However, if you're lamenting that a prominant corner like that deserves better then I would agree.

And yet, those of us who can remember the deserted, frightening, and depressing DMZ that downtown Edmonton was pre-circa-1996 should be able to find more to be positive about regarding the progress the city has made over the last decade or so.

^yup, that about sums it up. While disappointing news, I still think it can be saved... but do hope they spend a good amount of time reworking it.

ATB usually does pretty solid work, let's see what they can massage.

I really don't know what people expected. It was never a gorgeous project to begin with. The street level is what makes it acceptable, but the tower portion is plain, boring, unoriginal. Especially for such a prominent corner. This was evident way back when the original designs were released.

What's the outrage here, and why didn't we hear this prior to shovels hitting the ground?

So I remember hearing/reading that Ultima and Corner 1 Towers want to start up soon here. Any more info on that? I know with the snow we just had that may set them back a bit but I was wondering if any more has been said about these two projects.
