Hired by the Chinese association but then commenting on the farmers market? They do realize that the farmers market can expand north and or east.

The city's preferred downtown LRT route would cut through the Saturday 104th Street farmers market, putting the lives of shoppers at risk, says a lawyer hired to represent those opposed to the route.

The intersection where 104th Street connects with 102nd Avenue - the city administration's preferred downtown connecting route - is normally closed to traffic Saturdays and filled with children, artists and shoppers, said lawyer Sol Rolingher, speaking after city council referred the issue on Wednesday back to committee...

If so, then it's just nature's little way of thinning the herd. I say build it without any flashing lights or warning bells.

I think it's more important for our city to have a safe walkable destination downtown than it is to have trains rush through on a Saturday. The streetcars will slow down, and people will get out of the way without any barriers.

I'm guessing this lawyer hasn't seen Leidsestraat (Leidse Street) in Amsterdam? No market, but very active pedestrian environment that's closed off to normal vehicles except some cabs. So just people and streetcars, not unlike 104 St/102 Ave could be during market hours.

North NRT Newsletter, Winter 2012 edition

http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/LRT_Newsletter_WinterWEB_Final.pdf

I was surprised to read about the tail track at Health Sciences. I had no idea the North LRT was going all the way there! Makes sense though, connecting 3 post-secondary institutions with one train.

It goes all the way to South Campus, not just HS.

^I would assume that is just temporary. Once SC is fully up, they'll run it there too. It would only be an additional 5 min. It wouldn't make any sense for them not to

Except it adds numerous road crossings to the doubled up route, constrain capacity for the entire leg. At some point in the future when capacity was warranted, it would need to be cut - so why introduce it in the first place at considerable cost?

The problem is university avenue. This crossing is already at capacity. Should've tunneled here, maybe we can fix this years later.

Or maybe we can see LRT push to WEM from just south of Health Science instead of the current flawed plan.

Maybe it's because I only scimmed through the document, but I'm confused about your guys' conversation here. Are you saying the north LRT to NAIT, Kingsway, and Grant, connecting at Curchill will go down all the way to HS U of A and then turn back? If so, HS is far enough I'd say. People can get off and hop on a train going further south. I didn't even know it would go that far; I'd say U of A main station would be good enough even.

I don't recall there being much room for a train to turn around at Health Sciences. South Campus has that, but I guess that idea was scrapped because I do recall that being the original plan. Either way, my mistake.

You are correct.

HS is the better option than University station as you are connection two hospitals (Royal Alex, University) and the associated external speciality clinics adjacent to them.

AFAIK, the original proposal back in the day was to tunnel under University, but McKernan/Belgravia said no and fought for at-grade. :kook: Perhaps they figured tunnelled (or a trench, without covering past the intersection) would divide the community too much? I don't know, as that fight was before my interested in LRT development in the city.

I thought belmac fought for it to be tunneled the whole way to South Campus, but it was the city/uofa who said this wouldn't be feasible due to pipes and etc in the way... and the city balked at the cost...

I could be wrong.

I think the track is simpler than that. The train would stop at the tail track, the driver would hop out one end and climb back into the other end where the train would then start travelling the opposite way. That's my best guess.

^ bingo. The train doesn't turn around, after HS station, it pulls into the tail track, allowing the the driver time to go to the other end of the train, and pull back into HS station. Pulling into the tail track for the driver to switch ends keeps the line free, and allows the train to pull back into the proper direction for return trip to NAIT.

Council committee recommends changing downtown LRT route
Proposal could cost $60 million
By Gordon Kent, edmontonjournal.com January 31, 2012 2:07 PM

EDMONTON - Some members of the Chinese community were happy Tuesday after a city council committee recommended shifting the route of the proposed downtown LRT line.

Trains were set to run along 102nd Avenue from 107th Street to a tunnel entrance near 95th Street, but Chinese groups and central Edmonton community leagues want the tracks moved to 103rd Avenue-102A Avenue instead.
