It probably would but I was wondering what the plan was, that's all. From the video it looks like that's how they will build it but I wasn't sure.

EDMONTON - Transit service to Edmonton International Airport is “cleared for takeoff” after a council committee recommended funding Tuesday to try out the program for three years.

Edmonton Transit and the airport authority want to start daily bus service from Century Park LRT station next May, running every half-hour at peak times and once an hour off peak in regular vehicles equipped with luggage racks.

The cash fare would be $5, or a $100 monthly pass, with no transfers to the rest of the ETS system.

I wonder what impact this will have on the C-line bus that services not only the airport, but also Nisku and Leduc? Right now that line goes 8 times a day at half hour intervals, but only during rush hour on working days. They cost for that service is $75 a month.

^I wonder as well... used it once early AM and it was slick, but the times sucked generally speaking.

Looking forward to the new service.

I doubt the C-Line would be affected because it primarily services Leducians.

City urged to shift LRT route

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

The downtown LRT route should be shifted off a section of 102nd Avenue to protect Chinese cultural activities and seniors, speakers told a council committee Tuesday.

"It's irresponsible. It (doesn't) respect the Chinese community," said Henry Mah. "I don't feel that the railroad should go right through Chinatown. - It will divide our community right in half."...

.....

I think the biggest thing is 'fear of the unknown', mixed with the current LRT format that people are familiar with.

I think this whole issue is absolutely retarded. I don't think they realise that the tracks are walkable. Split the chinese community in half? Its that last 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 block before jasper ave, how is that half? And it will not have any barricades of any sort. If anything this is exactly what that community needs. Everytime I've been on that block I kid you not I've never seen a single person on the street except bums.. Place is a ghost town. Maybe would be a bigger issue if it went through 97st chinatown where its real busy ya but come on... Oh and to call it a railroad?! Hilarious... I think they're trying to point out its discriminating to them as in what's happened in the past. Come on really? People gonna hop on the transit and as it goes through chinatown it'll bring back memories of their grade 8 social studies class?

Oh and that gate.. Has always looked so pointless and out of place to me.. Having transit go through it will give it much more emphasis and I'm very sure will bring a lot more human traffic to the area

I really really hope not....

The city's current LRT plan seems to be what you get when committee and compromise plan a transportation network.

It's not that I'm opposed to LRT on 102 av, I think the corridor has huge potential, it can be used as a transitway, an east/west MUP for the north city center, as well as allowing for use by emergency vehicles. What it shouldn't be used for is the ROW of a crosstown LRT route.

IMHO, there are three tiers of rail transit, Commuter/Heavy rail, Metro/LRT and streetcars. Conveniently, Edmonton has three ring roads that can help define where each tier of rail transit is best used.

Tier 1 - Heavy Rail Transit

Based around a hub station at the municipal airport, existing heavy rail lines could be augmented and used to provide transit service to areas and communities near the exurban ring road. This would also provide the urban ROW for future HSR service.

Tier 2 - Metro LRT

Focused on providing rapid mass transit, with crosstown routes defined by the suburban ring road. For speed and scalability, grade separation should be used extensively, with traffic signal priority otherwise.

With 4 crosstown lines, sharing two downtown tunnels, and an eventual ring line, most of suburban Edmonton would have close LRT access.

Tier 3 - Streetcar

Focused on providing local mass transit, and promote growth and density along corridors. Best used in Edmonton in areas within the urban ring road.
Three east/west lines with a north/south connector and good integration into the metro LRT network provide excellent transit coverage to the urban core.

All together, makes for a pretty comprehensive network.

Interesting maps. I would agree with the 3 levels rail-based transit service, but offer a couple thoughts.

1) Commuter rail won't be needed until the population and congestion increase substantially. Likely a doubling of the population and 35 years of growth. (2% per annum compounded) In the meantime, commuter buses can and are in the process of filling this gap nicely.

2) LRT lines look ok, although I fail to see a true need (and ridership) for the looping line. This could be better accomplished by have the other lines terminus (or major station) at a transit centre near the Henday, and have express busses circulating the Henday in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions on regular intervals.

3) Streetcar line doubling what would be a similar line for the LRT underground for 25 blocks is a little counter intuitive IMO. 104th as the planned LRT line follows now through much of Oliver is a better separation from your proposed LRT under Jasper, and offers ample opportunity as the built-form and relationship to the street changes over the next number of years.

4) Lots of other little route adjustments, but it is really trivial when we are speculating from 10,000 ft.

Thanks for the feedback!

I should have stated above that I see the end-state map as a goal for say 2050.

Re: LRT loop, would definitely be the last developed, and I do agree with your suggestion for the bus loop on Henday.

That may well serve the purpose forever, but if a ring ROW is defined, the development to support LRT could be well on it's way there when it's actually built. Existing retail portions along the corridor could just be seen as TOD placeholders.

Re: Downtown line congestion, agree that having two subways and a streetcar line within four blocks in places can seem like overkill, my reasoning is as follows:

Basically the subways and streetcar line fill different roles. My biggest critique of the current plan is that it appears to want to fill both roles with one train and I fear it will fail on both fronts.

The subway tunnels on 104 av and jasper are there to each handle two crosstown lines of rapid mass transit. That means the 104 subway may only have stops at 116 st, 107 st and Churchill to keep end to end times on the line down.

Streetcar lines should in part, help keep rapid mass transit lines rapid. They can do so by providing more stops along a complementary corridor, thus providing local mass transit that can focus on building up the street presence in the corridor, and not worry as much about end to end transit times.

As an example, the Jasper line streetcar would negate a 95 st stop on NE LRT.

The streetcar ROW could also have huge added value by providing quick cross-core access to emergency vehicles. There's even 2 firehalls on blocks adjacent 102 av already...

Heh, admittedly the streetcar lines have plenty of room for improvement, especially the N/S line. Product of insomnia that one...

I have thought about the radial LRT lines quite a bit though, so I'm definitely interested in any thoughts on these routes.

IMO the metro LRT network is most important as this will provide the TOD areas and the rapid links necessary to accommodate significant population growth within the Henday.

City fast-tracks LRT expansion with push for $800 million
'I think we should build the sucker,' Coun. Iveson says

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

City councillors pushed ahead with LRT expansion plans Tuesday by asking staff to find $800 million for the project in hopes of starting construction within three years.

The proposal would see LRT trains running to Mill Woods from downtown by 2018, including a maintenance yard at Whitemud Drive and 75th Street that might be built as a public-private partnership, Coun. Amarjeet Sohi said...
