Non-stop service to Phoenix soars to new heights
Community demands more direct service from Edmonton

October 19, 2011 (Edmonton, Alta.) — Both US Airways and WestJet are adding more flights on larger planes to meet the demand for more direct service between EIA and Phoenix this winter. Service has already started increasing and will reach 24 flights per week in January, 2012. This is a substantial increase compared with 14 flights per week in January 2011. Over 100,000 passengers flew between EIA and Phoenix in 2011, making it EIA’s second-most popular US destination, just behind Las Vegas.

“Phoenix is a top pick for many leisure travellers, but the increased service will also be of tremendous benefit to business travellers,” said Peter McCart, EIA’s Vice-President of Strategy. “Phoenix is a popular US Airways hub that provides excellent connections to the southwestern US and Latin America,” added McCart.

EIA’s direct service to Phoenix, year-over-year comparison:

US Airways: 7 flights per week 14 flights per week
WestJet: 7 flights per week 10 flights per week
Overall seats: 2,182 per week 3,278 per week

Tuffy are you sure about these upgrades? I have looked at flights to Cancun on Air Transat and Transat Holidays for early February and they still show the A310-300.

On the topic of vacations, i went to the local travel agency in Sherwood Park Mall yesterday as we're thinking of taking advantage of the YEG-Orlando or YEG-Maui flights on WestJet. When i brought up the non-stop flight to Orlando, the travel agent said there is no non-stop flight to Orlando on WestJet and was quite adamant about it. I basically had to tell her the days of departures and general flight times to get it through her head. At that point, she mentioned these must be brand new flights as she had never heard of them. Needless to say i was ready to tear a strip off her.

I never use travel agents anymore for booking flights but for those that do, i can now see how many people must be misinformed and get routed through YYC for example when it's unnecessary.

I also just read that American Airlines has adjusted their codeshare with WestJet so that the evening flight to Phoenix on WS is now codeshared. This is good news because before that the only routes with the new codeshare were through YYC or YVR only.

Just saw a picture of the terminal from YEG's FB page...looks really blah and boring. Hopefully it will look better in person??

It's very nice, high quality finishes, but definitely minimalist in styling.

Hopefully you're right about it being nice. From that picture it looks like a long grey blank wall on the Eastside of the terminal. Does fit the theme of the area if your going for the Jasper Ave feel around the shaw conference centre.

The variation in materials, articulation, and considerable amount of other things to distract help to make it less dominating. I would love to see a cool white LED art piece on there or the like.

October 25 - Lufthansa Cargo Charter Agency GmbH has contracted general sales agent (GSA) AerodyneCargo Services Inc in Calgary as its second GSA in Canada, following its appointment of Airline Network Service as a GSA partner for the Montreal area just a few weeks ago.
Aerodyne Cargo Services will cover the Alberta region and Lufthansa says it started to work with GSAs in specific segments this year, to cover certain areas and industries beyond the sales reach of its partners in the Lufthansa Cargo Group.

With a focus on the charter market in the oil and gas industry, Aerodyne was chosen for its expertise and intensive contacts in that business.

We already sold the first charter flight from Milan, Italy into Edmonton with oil drilling equipment. We are looking forward to many more flights."

Very nice, indeed. Even as a pilot, who's goal is to never dent a plane, it's got to be pretty surreal actually deliberately (in these particular circumstances) damaging a plane. How do you psyche yourself up to do something like that? If he was nervous like never before, that landing didn't show it.
