Trust me, a thorny barrier will not work. What might help is to paint crosswalks at the intersections which would help drivers know it is a crossing and help the people who try to cross safely. But in reality, nothing is going to stop the jaywalking and a fine isn't going to get paid in many cases. It's hard to change " I don't care or don't know".

Agreed, all it would take is for drivers to actually realize that the pedestrians do in fact have the right of way at these unmarked crossings. It wasn't until this issue all came up that I even realized what the actually law was in SK. So last week I saw two kids trying to cross on 22ns in front of the Shoppers Drug mart, where they were legally supposed to, and they were stuck on the median because nobody would stop. So I slowed applied the brakes and came to a stop (as I am required to by law), and sure enough there were tires screaching behind me, it took about a dozen cars going though in the other lane (some of which were behind me and changed lanes to go around) before another driver realized I was stopped for pedestrians and did the same.

It is bloody ridiculous to blame pedestrians in my opinion, instead of writing jaywalking tickets police should be writing tickets to drivers failing to stop for the pedestrians.

When I lived in the US if you were hit as a J-walker it was 100% the J-walkers FAULT! Not that of the drivers, yes the driver has the larger presence, but it is not their responsibility to stop for people who cross outside of designated spots and even in designated spots its a challenge in the US)

I think it's the same as here in high school my freind of a friend was driving down lewvan when a kid was j walking accross and he ended up hitting the kid and sadly the kid did not make it but because the kid was j walking I don't think there was any charges other than speeding this was about 10 years ago so it's a little fogy . No matter what it was a very sad situation and affected my freind for years after that even how he was not at fault he felt there was more that he could of done to pervent it .

Hey Arts,

Do you think you could cut and paste and send what you wrote to your city councillor? I have been trying to make this argument with mine for some time and get no response at all.

I believe pedestrians are allowed to cross at any uncontrolled intersection as long as it is more than 1 block away from a controlled (walk lights, etc..) intersection.

As someone who drives this stretch of 22nd on a daily basis and watched someone bounce off of a car infront of me, I am always watching for people crossing. Half of the time people are trying to be safe about it and are forced to "j-walk" because of the lack of pedestrian crossings. The other half do so within a reasonable distance of crosswalks and purposely walk infront of traffic.

I do not support the idea of a barrier. Arterial road or not, we need to give pedestrians better access to crossing this road safely. There is alot of foot traffic in this area and its about time the city accomodate it instead of either ignoring the problem or creating additional barriers.

I'm not saying this to cause debate or anything, but I guarantee you... Had there been a section of a road that was as dangerous for pedestrians as 22nd street on the east side of the city, it would have been fixed years ago.

To me it's completely negligent of the city to only address the situation now when it's been a problem for as long as I can remember.

22nd

As I suggested before. Start with some painted crosswalks as they are the cheaper route and make the crossing visible as well as an enforcement program to charge drivers who don't pay attention. If this doesn't help, then move to traffic control devises.

Traffic to be Detoured Onto New Landfill Access Road at Valley Road Starting Tonight
For Release: August 29, 2011

IS11-397

As part of the Circle Drive South Project construction, there will be new routing onto Valley Road starting tonight at 6:00 p.m. Traffic driving south on Dundonald Road past the CN mainline rail crossing will approach the new landfill access road. Traffic will then head east on the new landfill access road to get to the landfill, or west on the new landfill access road to carry on along Valley Road.

This detour will be in place for approximately one month. The detour is to allow crews to construct the new access ramp to Valley Road from the new Circle Drive overpass.

Motorists are reminded to allow extra time when travelling through construction areas, watch for work crews, and obey all detours, signs, and barriers.

The Circle Drive South Project is Saskatoon’s most massive infrastructure project, involving a new south bridge, five interchanges, three railway grade separations, and
10 kilometres of freeway. The project will open on September 30, 2012. The Project Hotline is always open for recent updates and traffic detours at 1-888-851-5303. You can also check out the shots on the live web cam at Diefenbaker Park, facing west across the river to focus on bridge work, as well two cameras showing the work on the railway overpass and roadway overpass at 11th Street.

This always frustrates me. I have a friend who lives in Saskatoon and whenever I stop for a pedestrian at an unmarked intersection she says "You're not supposed to do that, that causes accidents, you only have to stop at crosswalks." I tell her that any intersection is considered a crosswalk and she informs me of the time that her (ex) boyfriend was having this argument with a friend so they asked a police officer who was nearby and that's what he told them. Either this cop is an idiot or he misunderstood what they were asking (I get the feeling he may have thought they were talking about jay walkers...) She always informs me that I could get a ticket! Uhh, no.

Pedestrians always have the right of way

As a motorist, you must stop for pedestrians who are preparing to cross at marked and unmarked crosswalks. You also need to stop for wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, medical scooters and people walking beside their bicycles because they are considered pedestrians as well.

New Stonebridge Big Box

Got in the mail a notice from the City about a rezoning meeting for a large new shopping centre at the southwest corner of Preston Ave and Circle Dr, developer is Northridge. The proposal is for a 23.9 acre site and would have approx. 270,000 square feet of commercial space!!! Since Stonebridge only has two main access points, Clarence and Preston, I would say traffic would be a major issue.

Also noticed there is a meeting for a "Rezoning Application for Elim Tabernacle - A proposal to develop 3 storey apartment style condos on the former Elim Tabernacle Church site." I thought it was previously announced that retail was going at this site?

Valley Road Detour

It sounds like they didn't mark the detour for eastbound off Valley Road properly and several people ended up in the dump. It will be nice when it is done.

That's funny. My friend drove a packing truck for most of the summer, and she said at least 5 vehicles a day would drive into the construction zone, thinking it was the way to the dump.

The city will really need to analyze whether or not Stonebridge can withstand that much more potential traffic through the current access points. That's an insane amount of space that wasn't originally in the plans when they laid out the design of the area. I could see that turning into a potential mess. Just think how much of a mess that could've been had they actually built the 2nd Costco that was rumoured. Yikes.

There are still rumours of a south side Costco for 2013.

IMO this is absolutely needed. I used to love going to Costco, but it's just gotten ridiculous in the last couple of years. This new commercial space being made available would be an excellent location for it proximity-wise to the city population, provided the infrastructure can handle it.

There is another entrance to Stonebridge in the plans for directly south of the upcoming Phase 12, which is west of Highway 11. Whether that's enough once everything's done, time will tell, but I am thinking not.

They should make that with two more ramps for Northbound entering SB and Southbound leaving SB. Although the current configuration will keep traffic more local and not as a cut through to South Clearance shopping through a residential neighborhood.

Just noticed that the Barking Fish is closed and renovations are taking place. Also there is a note on the door saying the new name of the place will be The Rook & Raven Pub. Couldnt find any information about the Rook & Raven Put on the internet.
