After I read Brigham's blog post yesterday, I got to thinking, "Why doesn't the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) do flower baskets on the lampposts?" Back in DC, I remember the Georgetown BID doing this on every street, and it looks amazing:

So I wrote the BID about it and got this response:

Thank you for submitting this. The DCBID used to put flower baskets on all of the light poles along the major corridors, however after they served for several years we were unable to keep up with the costs and the constant maintenance that they required. We are currently exploring various options on what we can do to beautify the area and I will make sure this is brought up to our Operations Committee, for reconsideration the next time we meet. One again, thank you for your feedback.

It would be great if the additional funds amassed by the BID as new businesses open up downtown could be used to cover the costs of maintaining flower baskets like this. It really does make a huge difference, both in beautifying the neighborhood and in providing a unifying design element to let visitors know "
This is Downtown."
