Cavalia in the snow

These workers were strapped to the top of the Cavalia tent on Saturday night. They seemed to be trying to clear the snow, but without much success.

Small photo update | February 25th 2011

It looks like Crane Park is just going to be grass for now.

After seeing that picture I can imagine that it will NOT be saved.

It looks like an old pumping station or something similar.

Yeah, looks like a pumping station to me too (i.e. it could still be in use).
BTW - the recent history of art moderne buildings in Vancouver isn't good - most have been torn down.

Cool to hear about Terra Breads. I swear they stole the idea from my brain! I've been thinking about why we don't have a waterfront cafe in Vancouver yet (or am I missing one?).

Since they were so concerned about the snow the other night, it was probably a precaution for the wind. It looks like it melted. Here's a picture of it from floor 15 at the Foundry this morning.

lol it looks deceivingly small when its all melted like that

That's a great picture btw, it illustrates how the sea foam glass actually excels quite nicely on those rare days where the sky is grey.

It's hard to believe they can fit 60 horses and an audience of close to 2000 in that tent.

I didn't know the area to the east of the Foundry was habitable?

Thanks for the warm welcome. My place doesn't look directly east, so I won't be able to get any high-angle perspectives on the James or the other construction in that direction until I get to know my neighbours.

Here's a shot from my balcony about 90 minutes ago.

Community Centre restaurant announced

^ Thanks for the pictures, and nice rainbow. You will certainly have to keep us all updated in the years ahead as your part of the neighbourhood grows.

First restaurant announced in Olympic Village
By MIA STAINSBY, Vancouver Sun March 2, 2011 3:49 PM

VANCOUVER -- When it comes to restaurants, his GPS always leads him to eye-candy.

Daniel Frankel, owner of Mill Marine Bistro, Burrard Bridge Bar and Grill, Prospect Point Cafe and Stanley Park Pavillion just got the go-ahead on another of Vancouver’s postcard locations.

He won the Vancouver Parks Board tender last Tuesday to operate a 6,000 sq. ft., 100-seat, two-level restaurant at the water-edge of the Olympic Village. It’ll be called Village Kitchen and has front-row seats to the seawall and False Creek. Currently, it is an empty building, ready to be developed.

All of Frankel’s restaurants, with the exception of Burrard Bridge Bar and Grill are on Parks Board turf. “I just think we live in a city with such breathtaking views and dining is not just about local food and beer and wine but the local elements as well. When I go out to eat I don’t want to be cooped in a space I can’t enjoy,” he says, explaining his attraction to beauty spots.

Village Kitchen, he says, will be a neighbourhood hub, “very much like Mill Marine Bistro,” he says. Two hundred outdoor seats (divided between ground level and second level patios) will certainly be a summer attraction, as will a new Aquabus terminal right in front of the restaurant.

^ Is the location they're speaking of the West side of the community centre?

I don't know what other retail space would be potentially 2-levels and waterfront?!

I *think* it could be in the restored red "barn" building, as I heard there was a restaurant going in there.
Hardly "waterfront" but since it's slightly elevated and has nothing blocking it's view (except two giant sparrows) it definitely will have an excellent view.

No, the Salt Building is going to be home to a new brew pub by the Mark James Group (Yaletown Brewing, Dix, Big Ridge, etc.)

This is going to be on the west side of the community centre. I knew that there would be a cafe/restaurant, but I'm surprised it is going to be as large as was quoted in the article. Having said that, now that I've dug up a photo I took of the community centre I can see how the restaurant will fit in:

Oh, OK. Thanks for the news.
So there's going to be two restaurants? Good! Although the location of the one in the community centre seems odd. I thought that area at the end of the community centre was a multi-purpose room? So where is the restaurant going - on the top floor, and where else (since it's described as a two-floor restaurant)?
