Do the actual homeless ever actually get involved?

They're young and naively idealistic but I wouldn't call them losers. I've been friends with people like that and generally they go on to do a variety of positive things with their lives. I may not agree with them on everything but that is natural in any human interaction.

Didn't we all have some illusions in our youth?

At what point do we cross the line from illusion to delusion~?

Exactly what good does showing up with a "No condos on stolen native lands!" sign do?

Are we just going to bulldoze them ?

As usual in Vancouver it's a very mixed bag of people who show up, and in the end you don't know what they actually want.

Since the city is still leaving 252 units as social housing, which are being filled now...

I'm with Yamu, they aren't illusions, they are delusions. Figured if it were students protesting they'd at least display the intelligence to properly research what they are protesting, and all the consequences of the protest, before they go out and do it (and not do it for shits and giggles). I'd love to see the protesters tasked to do community service over this.

And I have't had any illusions yet. I have personal aspirations. There are things I see wrong with the world, and I am setting myself up to be in a position where I can at least change some of things for the better... And that does not include meaninglessly marching around with a poorly written and researched sign while breaking into & trespassing on personal/private property.

Yikes, Penny Ballem was scary looking.

So if they broke into the suite why weren't they arrested? Is the VPD going soft?

Am I the only one that noticed on the newscast that had Penny Ballem's name listed as Penny Ballance.

I think some of the protesters were secretly glad the police moved them along, would've sucked for them if there was no police presence at all and instead they had to stay out there in that weather.

Bob Rennie's interaction with them last week was all I needed to see. Puts a dose of reality into the whole thing.

They also threw rotten fruit at his office on Saturday. Classy all the way!

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the articles appearing as far a field as the NY Times that Vision's plan to rent OV suites to "essential workers" has been a complete flop. Though I can't blame them, who'd pay $1,600 a month for a 1 bedroom with no dishwasher or insuite laundry!

Why don't have they a dishwasher or insuite laundry? Is this some new green thing?

Do they have a community toilet, too?

You can rent *downtown* for $1600 a month and have those things AND a parking spot lol

They can't rent them out for $1600/month? What about $1500/month, then? At that rent, a savvy investor would offer about $225K to purhcase, maybe less, given the excessively high (relative to comparables) strata fees.

How much are the strata fees?

The average downtown hovers around $0.43/sq. ft

Yeah for $1600 I would chose the Capitol over OV with those setbacks.

Crowe & First

Anybody know anything about the little building on the NW corner of Crowe and 1st? Plans to save it? It looks a little Art Deco/Streamline Moderne with the curved corners and flat roof.

some good news...

Terra Breads to open in former Olympic Village

Monday, 28 February 2011

Vancouver-based Terra Breads has signed a 10-year lease for a new café that will open in July and face both the main plaza at the Village on False Creek and the waterfront.

Owner Michael Lansky told Business in Vancouver February 25 that he planned to open a 2,100-square-foot café and sell his well-known artisan breads and bakery items at 1605 Manitoba Street.

“I think it’s a good location,” Lansky said. “The Village is going to develop into a wonderful community, a vibrant community. It’s important to have Vancouver businesses like ours in there.”

Lansky opened his first bakery in Kitsilano in 1993 and then added a location in Granville Island in 1995 and one on West 5th Avenue in 2005.

The West 5th Avenue café and the one on Granville Island have bakeries but the one in the Village will just be a café.

now that's some great news! I imagine LD will be open by the Summer. so we should see a good retail scene in place by next fall/winter.
