I'm curious about this whole development...
Oh, that is some fine lookin' sprawl

Had to laugh at "Saskatchewan has excellent political leadership", Google Earth pullback to space, most of the narration and accompanying images. What an awkward promotional video.

Sprawl it is unfortunately. I find it interesting because of its size and the fact that it's sprawling towards the city, not out.

I thought the video was fine , plus there is no more urban sprawl than in Saskatoon whats the difference, there are going to be some highrise office and condo towers in the town centre a beautiful place it will be, dont judge until you see the plans, a new city there is also lovely lands out there, anything but yuck

Yeah, 8-10,000 residents is substantial. I wonder how that will impact development decisions in Regina -- it'll be difficult to compete with quiet country living.

You need to stop being so defensive. Not everyone is out to attack you, Regina or Saskatchewan.

A beautiful place, I'm sure it will be.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Well considering how Regina is continually expanding east, and now there is this megaproject expanding west toward Regina, I honestly don't know how long it will be until these areas end up being swallowed up by Regina. Maybe they will remain independent, who knows... but it used to seem much further to go from the edge of Regina to White City/Emerald Park.

I think this development does target a certain crowd... mostly the young families or retirees. Young people who haven't started a family yet will still tend to prefer being in Regina over more rural locales (even those it isn't far from Regina at all). And there seems to be a cultivation of a desire to live downtown now in the young professionals, so as you say, it will be interesting to see this dynamic develop.

But in any case, at least this development will push into Regina's metro population.

I'm pretty sure I can post wherever I please.

And for the record, I could care less if this project was in Saskatoon. Suburban sprawl isn't my cup of tea. In fact, it doesn't look that different from Evergreen, Rosewood or Willowgrove in Saskatoon.
Now, some of your towers going up, on the other hand...

Anyway, I'm going to go "thrash" my way back to the Saskatoon board.

As you can tell from the video, their focus right now is on getting investors, particularly international investors. They say they will start selling lots in 2011, but as far as I know there has been no subdivision of lots or construction of infastructure.

I'm in Regina and I'm anything but jumping for joy for this project.

It's sprawl....more sprawl. Better designed sprawl, but sprawl nonetheless.

Saskatoon would not be jumping for jo over this....there's no reason to.

To each their own. I love to see the downtown thrive and be vibrant, but I personally wouldn't want to live there. If the people didn't want "sprawl", they wouldn't purchase that type of land to build their homes. I think it's great that we have some choice now. There are are some great developments going downtown, as well as some great developments in the suburbs.

To me, raising a family downtown, isn't ideal. I love the fact that I can take my kids outside and have a full football game in my backyard.

Here is a link to a story on Saskatchewan's growing population. Very impressive numbers.

Yes!!!! As long as Sask. has an increasing population, there will be further cause for more projects and economic development. That is the common denominator here.

I clearly understand the concerns of families in regards to downtown living. However, building an efficient, safe city with reduced ecological footprint must include a vision for established neighborhoods, underutilized and undeveloped lands within city limits. Anyways, I don't want to discuss what types of communities are healthier and more sustainable. I am far more interested in how Clear Vistas-White City fits into Regina's growth plan...

I will never jump for joy over more urban sprawl. Usually kills more farmland that we WILL be needing when the energy crunch starts to hit us over the next few years and we need to grow more food locally. In a future where it will be too expensive to ship food in from around the world/country and people will no longer be able to live a 20+ minute drive from work. People must have heard of "think local". We'll see how happy these people out in clear vistas/white city and the burbs will be when the house they paid $750,000+ for won't even fetch $200,000 in a resource dwindling world. Not to mention the hidden costs of having to pay for all the underground infrastructure you don't see going into these new areas. (ie. water, sewage, electricity, roads, etc) and all leading out to a low density area. But don't take my word for it, just sit back and watch.

Demolition of Regina's Plains Hotel set to begin
Planning in place to protect adjacent buildings from collapse

Story Tools
ShareThisReported By Patrick Book
Posted September 29, 2010 - 12:49pm
The demolition of the former Plains Hotel building on the corner of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue begins Wednesday, but will continue through the next several weeks.

A ceremony will be held Wednesday afternoon at the site with Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco and Westgate Developments CEO Yosup Kim knocking out a cornerstone of the building with sledgehammers.

That's just the start. The next month will see the interior of the building completely gutted. Westgate Development's Lin Saplys says the actual demolition will occur in November and it will be carefully executed.

"There's adjacent buildings around that have to be carefully monitored for vibrations and so forth because the shoring and the underpinning that has to go in at the two adjacent buildings will take a while. That will take place over the winter months," said Saplys.

That shoring will ensure the adjacent streets and buildings don't collapse when crews begin digging down three stories to build the underground parking garage for the new hotel development.

File photo of the Plains Hotel in Regina taken by Samantha Maciag on Sept. 11, 2010.

News Release - September 29, 2010

1,045,622 OF US: SASKATCHEWAN GROWING AT FASTEST RATE OF ANY PROVINCE IN CANADA
Saskatchewan's population grew at the fastest rate of any Canadian province over the past year according to the latest population figures released today by Statistics Canada.

As of July 1, 2010, there were 1,045,622 people living in Saskatchewan - an increase of 4,887 people over the past quarter and 16,498 people over the past year. That's the largest quarterly increase in Saskatchewan's population since 1982 and the largest year-over-year increase since 1953.

The year-over-year growth rate of 1.6 per cent is the highest of any province in Canada.

Premier Brad Wall said that continued strong growth is a sure sign Saskatchewan is on the right track and moving forward.

"Just a few short years ago, our province was actually losing people," Wall said. "Now we are the fastest growing province in the country. People are looking for opportunity and a great quality of life, and that's what we have right here in Saskatchewan."

Saskatchewan saw net interprovincial migration (number of people moving in minus moving out) of 1,027 people in the most recent quarter. More than half of that gain - 564 people - came from Ontario, with another 282 coming from Quebec and 150 from Manitoba.

Saskatchewan also saw net international migration of 2,437 people and a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,423 people from April 1 to July 1.

Saskatchewan has now grown by more than 50,000 people since the start of 2007.

"Saskatchewan is the best province in the best country in the world and our government is working hard to make sure the great quality of life we all enjoy in this province gets even better in the years ahead," Wall said.
