EDMONTON — Edmontonians will have more flights at the Edmonton International Airport this winter, partly because 2.5 per cent fewer residents are driving to Calgary to catch a plane, airport officials said Monday.

Airlines will offer 21 per cent more flights — 1,300 more seats a week between November and April — than last winter. WestJet, Sunwing and Continental Airlines have all added extra flights this winter.

Westjet will actually have fewer flights (281 weekly in 2010 down from 284 in 2009). Continental is not adding flights, they are uprading their equipment to a 738 for part of the winter season (not all). Sunwing is the only carrier mentioned that is adding flights and that is really only 5 flights extra flights per week. AC is increasing a net 12 flights per week but those are mainly on their massive 50 seat Jazz a/c. Transborder flying will also be down in both flights and capacity across the board. What a load of crap....is he just trying to justify the construction of so many (un-needed) new gates?
How is the Stop the Calgary Habit working?! The airport stats are not showing it. YTD growth of 0.3% (vs 3.3% for YYC).... come on!?

WestJet added a Montego Bay and Orlando flight and has also doubled the Maui flight to twice weekly. The Continental upgrade you mentioned which increases that route to a larger 737-800 from a 737-500 (20+132 seats versus 8+106).

Winners of the 2010 World Routes Airport Marketing Awards were formally announced yesterday at the World Routes Gala Networking Evening at Rogers Arena (formerly known as General Motors Place), Vancouver, Canada. The awards included four regional categories: Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa.

So how is the Stop the Calgary Habit campaign working again? Where is the proof in these numbers? In fact, they contradict what the EIA has just publicly stated in their recent press release last week. They must have a different set of "books." Embarrassing! The transborder weak result was expected due to capacity cuts and the montly growth for August in international is off a very low base so only ~ 1,200 passengers more for the entire month compared to 2009. Yet, strangely....YYC continues to grow significantly.
