If you've ever been up in a B727 - the noise of three engines is quite something and you could look out the back and see a stairwell there, as it had a set of retractable stairs for egress out the back - a feature that only the B727 had.

I know what you mean - I remember as a kid having to exit through the rear end of an Ansett Australia 727 in Canberra after a flight from Sydney. That was kind of interesting.

Last flight I had on a 727 was only a couple of years ago on First Air up to Resolute.

Quite an experience.

the 757 is an amazing plane for its role and purpose. Overpowered, easy to fly, but has this nasty little wake that can upset others on approach.

Ian and all, I don't get the angst on the 727 and the 9. It is a little unfounded. Sure, the 9 didn't trim well, but for its role, was a workhorse of many fleets. The 727 is only second to the 737 in its success, and it was only usurped with its fuel consumption as operators wanted twins v tri jets. The 727 is probably my favorite airplane from Boeing. It's design just screams fast, and with its leading edge flaps, it had amazing performance. Given the $$$, I would take an old 72 over a BBJ!

Fuel use and being able to fly into noise restricted airports mayhaps?

I could see that, especially if he is frequenting some of the nicer private airports in the US. Well to do residents around it probably don't appreciate the awesome sound of a classic trijet like the 727.

Everyone smoking and the American Science group shooting Champagne corks around you still have to fight for a blanket since the pilot didn't like heat. My first flight in was on a cargo flight out of Magadan, no seating for the 12 of us, so we had to find room on top of all the cargo. The flight ahead of us didn't know the forklift stabbed the plane until they reach 10000 ft.

It is probably more maintenance than fuel/noise. Many 727 VIP's are being sold with noise limits below Stage 3 and could be extended to Stage 4.

JT8D's can be played with, but they are a bit older...

The main reason usually is the desire for a cooler plane...like a F900EX or a G IV...

Ive flown on the Ilyushin 96. its like a gymnasium with wings. quite the aircraft. I had a chance to fly on a Tupolev Tu-134 but the flight was cancelled due to mechanical problems, so they subbed a 737... too bad

Still trying to put together a list of all the aircraft I've been on, but since the Siberia trip not much else compares. Maybe the Twin Otter into Griese Fjord.

And flying up north you can get your fill of classics.
