Just a minor nit pick: Nandos is from South Africa, Boston Pizza started in Edmonton and the first Hy's was in Calgary.

Yup. I know. In any case, those chains are HQ'd in Vancouver. So, that's where the current restaurant concepts and menus originate

east side mario's was in winnipeg 20 years ago....i only found out a few years back that it was a chain....

Not restauarnts, but does anyone else remember when we had Valdi's and Dominion grocery stores? There was also Bi-Way...

My first job was a cook in a Champs Kentucky Fried Chicken, well before Pepsico bought them out.

Don't remember Valdi's, Dominion was Safeway's main competitor. Used to be one in Polo Park and one on Kildonan place where the theatres are now.

The last few Dominions have just disappeared in Toronto. The name "Dominion" used to be the grocery equivalent of "Eaton's" or "Esso" in Canada.

There used to be a lot more grocery stores around. The A&P and the Tom Boy and of course Loblaws and Dominion. Then the stores got bigger and fewer in number and most of the old locations were converted to other things or demolished.

Of course there was the one in Norwood in the middle of aptly named Dominion Centre. It is where Shoppers is now, the Rogers used to be Consumers Distributing.

We used to shop at the Dominion store at KP, Beaver Lumber on Regent where Future Shop currently sits...I am 99% sure Valdi used to be in the Eastwinds Plaza across from KP where Salvation Army used to be; that is where Bi-Way was located too. I also remember a dry goods store in downtown Transcona on Regent...Joe Blostein & Son; great little store.

awww beaer lumber remembers as a kid getting colouring books everytime i went there with my dad think it was the one out on pemida highway and if i am not mistaken ther was one on mcphillips to

Bonanza was a joke here, at least before they left town. Last time I ate there had the t-bone steak. less than 5mm thick, browned on the outside, raw and chewy on the inside. Got them to get me another and it was the same. Got chicken instead. Funny thing is, I ate at the Bonanza in Detroit Lakes (15 years ago probably) and it was fantastic! I noticed they have a Bonanza in Saskatoon when we drove through in November.

My favorite Bonanza memories were watching those at the salad bar fill their bowls with soup, taste it, grimace and then pour it back in the pot for others to enjoy. What a swell joint!

I hope you can get a Jack As(tor')s (http://www.jackastors.com/). I thought they were pretty good. My wife took me to one while we were in Toronto visiting family. I don't know about now, but the servers used to sing you the menu. They're based out of Ontario, and have most of their locations in Ontario, but have branched out to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Alberta (Calgary), and U.S. Their outdoor neon sign, when lit at night, would flash off/on the "tor' " portion of the name (Jack Astor's) as if a broken sign, to periodically spell ... you guessed it!

Alice Fazooli's Italian Grill is another chain based from T.O. that comes to mind. We went a number of years ago when they featured a promotion of "seafood" such as crawfish, alligator, various large marine fish meats (marlin, tuna, etc.). Another highlite was that they played Italian vocabulary lessons in the washroom continually!

Lick's Homeburgers and Ice Cream (http://www.lickshomeburgers.com/) is a fastfood chain from T.O. (now you know where I spend some of my time!) that my wife also grew up on. After the server takes your order at the counter he/she will usually sing your order to the cooking team. Lick's makes pretty good burgers rivalling Fatburger, but like Alice Fazooli's (http://www.alicefazoolis.com -- oops! I forgot to include the link in my last post!), it looks like all their locations are within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Maybe some enterprising restrauteur in Winnipeg can change that!
