Well, maybe like New York City for example, which has overwhelmingly local restaurants. Or maybe Paris, which isn't celebrated for the number of "East Side Mario's" that it has.

Any restaurant that is named after someone invented by a marketing agency should be banned, for starters. If East Side Mario can explain his connection to Winnipeg, then maybe.

This only leads me to believe you have never been to New York or Paris. My experience was a noticable amount of fast food restaurants. While the makeup of dense innercity of major urban centres does not offer the cheap suburban land that a city like Winnipeg can provide, you need only travel outwards to find an excess of middle income cookie cutter chain outlets. Of course both NYC and Paris have amazing independant restaurants.

I won't even go into the fact that it is fairly common that multiple "independant restaurants" in NYC are owned by the same ownership group, who reproduce a successful formula again and again (under different names), thus is a quazi - chain anyways.

Winnipeg...NY, Paris...Winnipeg...hmmmm....

Chains exist for a reason: people like them. They fail for a reason: they are inferior. Forget the chain, per se, and focus on the menu. East Side Marios is pretty blah, but damn, the ribs I had at Moxies in Prince George a few months ago were perfect. Chili's is great! One of my favs is Grand Lux...amazing ambiance; amazing food....

"A McDonalds???"

"Yeah... apparently there are over 4,000 of them in this state alone."

"Must have sprung up overnight."

The Moxies here renovated last month. It looks like shit. It took them two months and it is quite possible the ugliest part of a building I have ever seen.

I hope they get their money back and the company that did it goes out of business after whichever employee designed that abortion dies in a firey wreck.

No way... Winnipeg could never support a KFC.

Maybe we'll get a Subway someday, but I doubt it will be soon. I did hear that the 7-11 might start selling hotdogs next year.

Reginas chain to interesting restaurant ratio is way to high. There are plans of a 2nd East side Marios opening here, 2 Earls now and 2 Applebees have popped up in the last 2 years. Last time I was in Winnipeg I had(what I believe) some amazing pizza at a place on Corydon. Forget the name but I do know they only served Keiths and it was sort of a anything goes for toppings on the pizza for the same flat price. A dream for me.

Can we trade you a Salsbury for a Burger Baron? Switch things up a bit?

Another at St. Vital Centre. There are 2 Earls locations within very close proximity at both St. Vital Centre and Pembina and Bishop. There are a couple more too.

Does/did Winnipeg have Chester Fried Chicken? Does Chester Fried even exist anymore?

I miss their potato wedges. There is a little storefront near me that used to be a Chester Fried, and since it closed, at least a dozen businesses have tried opening there and not one has lasted more than 4 months. It just reopened as something else, I can't even remember what it is.

The location is cursed.
