Might be the wrong place for this, nor do I know if anyone will care.

But it looks like Edmonton will have a soccer team coming in 2011, to play in the newly formed NASL.

Who's going to build a soccer stadium? If soccer wants any public money for a stadium they need to proove themselves first. As it stands professional soccer has been nothing but a hilarious joke in this city and it would be criminal to divert any money that would go to upgrades at Commonwealth or the new rink to support a bunch of eurotrash play pretend hurt infront of 750 people.

^It's dumb. I can understand saying Oliver sort of area is downtown as it's widely mistaken as such, but 107th Avenue doesn't even look downtown. Are we just calling anything that is in a neighborhood without 2 car garages, big box stores, and cul de sacs downtown because anywhere slightly urban in this city has to be downtown=evil!

Anything between 90-something and and 120-something Streets north of the river but south of 118 Avenue is "Downtown" for the media, unless your neighborhood ends in -dale.

Simple solution? I now live in Oliverdale. There's new neighborhoods of NorthEdgeDale, QueenMaryParkdale and so forth.

I don't live 'downtown', but I do live near downtown, 'inner city' or whatever you want to call it... It;s just easier to say 'downtown' when you're talking about an area in or immediately surrounding the DT core.
I suppose the optics are bad when you're taling about crime, but every downtown has the same problems as ours. Anyone who doesn't realize that should probably go spend some time in other cities.

A friend of mine waaaay back in highschool had a old 240DL wagon that had been coerced to hold a Ford 351 in it and painted it a glittery purple color. Now that was a funwagon.

Sure. I think a central, old neighborhood or urban community would be more accurate than "downtown" though. Alberta Ave, Chinatown/97th, Westmount/124 St, Strathcona, Bonnie Doon, Beverly, Belgravia, Argyll, Downtown East are all common enough terms for areas central but not downtown that people can associate with. Most people know Alberta Avenue, Beverly, etc. People don't know Boyle Street, but could associate with east of downtown, Downtown East, or just south of 97 St Chinatown. For those north edge communities one could say just north of downtown or near Kingsway. You don't need to associate as apart of downtown, though.
