Love the fact that The Pearl was approved at 35 stories, wish we could have some more of that closer to the core as well, but certainly nice to see.

I wouldn't mind seeing the blue (probably stucco?) wall be glass as well, but compared to the Icon's this is a big step up.

Garneau Theatre Receives Historical Designation

October 28, 2009

The City of Edmonton has added a local landmark to its list of over 80 designated municipal historic resources. The Garneau Theatre, designed and built in 1940, received the official designation this morning from City Council. The Garneau is located at 109 Street and 87 Avenue.

Receiving designation as a Municipal Historic Resource legally protects the property from being significantly altered or torn down. In exchange for having those conditions placed on the property, the City provides financial incentives of up to 50 per cent of the total cost of restoration work.

“Edmonton has developed one of the most generous financial incentive programs in the country to help owners protect, restore and rehabilitate heritage buildings,” says Robert Geldart, Principal Heritage Planner with the City.

The owners of the Garneau applied to have the historic designation earlier this year. The City will pay up to $547,239.30 of the total cost of the restoration work of $1,026,526. The budget for renovating the entire building (interior work, electrical, mechanical, etc.) is an estimated $3,200,000.

The city has over 600 properties on the Register of Historic Resources in Edmonton, an inventory of buildings or landmarks having important historical value. Eighty-four of those, including the Garneau, have received official designation as Municipal Historic Resources, and thus are protected from changes that would alter their heritage character.

The Garneau Theatre has heritage value as an early suburban movie theatre that was built during World War II. It is an excellent example of the Art Deco “moderne” style of theatre architecture, reflecting the work of its architect William G. Blakey, an important architect of that time in Edmonton.

“We are really pleased that this historic landmark now has this protected status,” says Geldart, “and that the owners of the Garneau share the City’s commitment to fostering and preserving our heritage buildings.”

Not sure if this is news, but FYI MacEwan has pledged to consolidate all of it's operations (currently they have four campuses around the city) downtown.

Did the Alberta Hotel get approved? I just looked at the weekly building permit report and it shows foundation permit for a 14 unit hotel 9804/9854 Jasper Ave

^ I noted that earlier on today... don't know if the building has gone thru EDC yet, or even if it will, but the site is fenced off and an aquaintance who works for Dub told me that the city has told Gene to get on with it, so yes it looks like this building will be going ahead shortly.

Should be an interesting project to say the least.

Its a good project. I had a lot to do with the AH about 15 years ago.
Its a real gift for the developer.
When the Canada Place was built, Trizec put up a 1 million dollar bond to build a hotel and use elements of the Alberta Hotel (and another historic building). Trizec never built the hotel and the City put the 1 mil in a holding account. In about 1995 or 96 the interest on the bond was about $200,000. The City used this money to re-crate the AH pieces and have all the pieces inventoried and cateloged.
If a developer came along to re-build the AH on or in close proximity to the original site, he could have the materials for free, and (i believe) could use what was left over of the $200K to build the hotel

RE: Alberta Hotel

My understanding is that the Alberta Hotel was dismantled, catalogued, and is sitting somewhere in storage now. So what exactly is the scope of this project? Is it a reconstruction? A new building with historic facade?

Also...I gather it is going north side of Jasper Between ATB and Canada Place?

Also, I suppose it would make sense to reconstruct a building like this, in our current economic times.. assuming the owner has cash. You could pull in the best of the best in the trades to get it done...

Another Building in storage is the old Strand (Pantages) Theatre. This would back a great live theatre venue.

But AH will be a great re-addition.

With the property to the west being designated for the Arts building, I wonder where they will find the room? Consolidating the other 3 campus locations downtown would be great.

I guess they would phase this in over a number of years, and lease these old GMCC/University buildings.

To my understanding, the new arts campus was/has been proposed to be built on the portion of parking lot/land west of the new student residence.

*edit* whoops, read that wrong. After the fact, I would assume the campus would try to aquire more land to its north - a lot of the businesses there are pretty shabby and run down.

From what I've heard, there is a deal to sell some land on 105th ave to MacEwan (well, I'm sure there are others, but I know of one specifically...).

If you are talking about this building where do you see any white? There isn't any.
Yellow or beige...whw knows maybe it could even be brick, that would be a welcome change.

Very cool to hear the Alberta Hotel going ahead. I saw the site fenced off but thought maybe they were just re-working the park.
I would be very pleased if the park could be relocated adjacent to the Ruth Chris/EEDC building on 100st and Jasper...it seems very unlikely that lot will be developed anytime soon with the LRT making its turn underneath it.

So awesome and although i wish it was on a vacant lot, it will a lot of character to that area and create another good gathering place for the SHAW.
