i've been meaning to ask, what the hell is the point of building a condo tower out there? it just seems pointlessly tall as when i see all the condos around my area in the NW (4-5 story suckers)

Thanks all, I do believe the 3rd and last tower of Ovation is almost done.

It does seem like a while but it's a rather large development.

It's along the route of the future West LRT line. Westbrook Station will only be a block away. The location is about 3km from the western edge of downtown.

As for the height and density -- it's all about maximizing the views and the use of the land.

Related question: how many towers/clusters are there outside of downtown Calgary?

...I've read that when you go up the Tower, downtown appears much smaller and you only see low-density & parking lots outside downtown. (opinion of a Montrealer of course)

Sadly, seeing a shot from the Calgary Tower towards Arriva kinda fits this description. I guess that area is being densified, which should improve CGY's looks from above.

The area to the Southeast of the Calgary Tower does still have a lot of surface parking, but that is also where the most development is occuring. Calgary has a good 20-25 years of intensification at this rate to fill the majority of those holes in.

Not many that's for darn sure. A couple clusters at the universities and another half dozen towers dispersed along Macleod? (I know the street ends in Trail)

You can see the crane for EAP to the right of FCC (BMO logo) and the TD Canada Trust tower. Steelwork should start showing up soon from that angle and when completed it would appear around as tall as the second tallest blue tier on the Canterra building.

Drove through downtown TO tonight on the way to Niagara and someone definately needs to tone down the lights on RBC. It looks cool and everything, but definately stands out from the rest of the buildings too much at this point.

In the meantime, here is a bit of a reverse skyline shot I took from my condo in Ottawa yesterday. By that I mean my condo is in the CBD and this is the view looking out from my balcony (basically, the skyline you see when you're in the skyline). Not as tall or impressive as some of the other cities in the 'Big 6', but some serious density nonetheless.

Re: clusters, very few. Basically around the university/SAIT area in the NW, and strung along MacLeod Trail for quite some length. There are some suburban lone office "towers" scattered throughout the city too.

I would say that east of City Hall, and Victoria Park, SE of the Calgary Tower fits that description (although Victoria Park has seen much improvement, and will continue to in the near future) but not so the other areas around downtown. Immediately south of the core is Beltline, a dense mixed-use neighborhood of mainly mid-rise and high-rise residential towers and office buildings. The CBD itself is densely built with office towers, and the West End of downtown is mostly (ugly) high-rise condos. Granted we certainly have holes to fill, but I think that could be said of all the large Canadian cities to a degree (except perhaps Vancouver)
