I personally think that it is sometimes better to not translate these signs into English (we got the icon and they should be able to figure it out) It would just make people laugh at the poor translation~

Does anyone remember the MTR-KCR merger song the MTR had for those tv ads? Now, if only we had that kind of happy mentality for transit lol...

Subway in

traditional Chinese: 地鐵
simplified Chinese: 地铁

========

Cantonese: 港鐵 (MTR)

they would have to change it to 溫哥華鐵

I've seen skytrain with a this door out of service sign probably twice or three times in the past 15 years. I've also seen one MkI car (of a set of 4) out of service a few times as well.

Canada Line: 14.5km Waterfront to Richmond-Brighouse, 24 minutes: 36km/h average
The Canada line's average speed is slower for a couple of reasons:
  • Station Spacing. I believe it's hovering at around 1000m avg. between most stations. The SkyTrain currently is around 1500m, if I'm not mistaken. This puts it into just a little over Toronto distances, which is around 800m - 1200m between stops. It's about the same average speed of Toronto's system as well ( a tad faster )
  • Acceleration - Although purely based on knowledge of the technology and anecdotal evidence, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rotem trains were considerably slower to accelerate. This exacerbates the station spacing issue, as there are few times the train is actually travelling at full speed. Ironically, the SkyTrain LIM technology is a better fit for this line due to station spacing, whereas the Rotem trains better for the M-Line ( train size nowithstanding )

I can't wait until we see direct head to head technical specs between the two units.

nname, what stats have you got?

There are 20 stations on the Expo Line Waterfront - King George
28.9/20 = 1.445 km between stations
There are 13 stations on the M Line Columbia - VCC
20.3/13 over 1.5 km between stations
There are 13 stations on the Canada Line Waterfront - Richmond-Brighouse
14.5/13 just over 1.1 km between stations

Part of the reason why avg speed on Canada Line is lower is that there are relatively more stations.

Yep, the wind whistling through King Edward was cold and it felt gale force as the train neared. Bridgeport seems very exposed to the elements, it won't be fun on a rainy February morning.

And.. I later take that Bridgeport train out of the airport.. I guess this is quite rare (sorry for the bad quality):

Well, after leaving each station, the announcement says "This train is for Bridgeport..." but when arriving at Bridgeport, there is no announcement both in and outside of the train, and no attendant asking people to get out or prevent people getting in, so I watched about 50 people went in the OMC along with the out of service train.....
^ oh man! that's not good for PR. Some trains go out of service after 6pm at Bridgeport, hence the YVR and Rmd spurs stations should display that signage with the "Bridgeport" as the destination. The system 'should' announce for all passengers to leave at Bridgeport automatically, with manually inputted messages reminding people that the train is going out of service. After arriving at Bridgeport the train should be cleared of passengers before routing back to the yard. I guess they slipped up that day.

has it stopped jerkily or suddenly when you've been on it?

the two times i have been on it it did this jerking motion when stopping and people almost fell over - is that going to be normal?

The sexy automated station train destination announcements:

Regardless, the folks at the Canada Line have set a huge new standard for Translink to follow regarding electronic displays, automatic station announcements, and onboard train announcements. I'm very impressed.
I'm just curious, but do the onboard train stations mention before they leave the station(s) "Please stand clear of the door" (haha..like the MTR trains in HK)?

I can clearly hear the A/C compressor/fan going full blast, I can't explain why the trains are so muggy other than maybe they undersized the A/C unit considerably.

So when are they going to change the Expo/Millennium line's PA system to match the Canada line ? C-line's PA system sounds so much better.

As for the Chinese translation, I would have just translated it as "地鐵:加拿大線", which basically translate to "Subway: Canada Line". Honestly, I still think Canada Line is the stupidest name for a subway line. Everywhere else they actually use the region's name for their subway line's name... it sounds so unnatural translated.

Maybe they should call it "Canada's Line."

I'm almost betting they deemed naming it "Olympic Line" to be too controversial.

I know newcomers from China are most used to the term 地铁(Subway), but Translink already branded the Canada Line as part of the Skytrain system.
Recently the Chinese language press used the term 捷運 more than ever. I guess 捷運 is also the official name of taiwan metro system (which has many elevated tracks like ours)
