Whenever ravman speaks, it reminds me of that scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Chewie realizes that Han is about to be frozen in carbonite and goes ballistic on the Stormtroopers, prompting Han to go: "Chewie! Chewie, this won't help me. Hey!", where the Stormtroopers are the etiquette of rational conversation, and Han is any sensible NDP supporter.

I'm fairly late chiming in on this...

Yes, three minutes feels about right based on my recollection. The train is not going flat and there are numerous switches along the way.

Switches? If it were Bombardier LIM, it would pass by the switches at full speed.

No, it won't, because the train needs to switch switches.

they should put banners on the stations - downtown at least about the opening - i saw a number of tourists looking at the yaletown station and i am sure some might be here or may even come back - if they were from close enough like seattle - to check it out in operation

It's been open ONE MONTH; a lot of people probably haven't adjusted their schedules yet. Besides, its summer; let's see how it does come September. Also keep in mind, ridership on rail lines generally seems to grow quite quickly in the first few years (see Millennium Line for example, though some of that is due to U-Pass being introduced), and then slow down to a more long term growth rate. Judging a system designed to operate for decades and decades based on a single month of performance is stupid. Also, from what some Seattle forumer posted at some point, their extension to UW (short distance, only a couple miles IIRC) is expected to boost ridership quite a lot when it opens.
I think it's rather pathetic that people are mocking Seattle.
- They have a freeway downtown
- Their line doesn't yet go to the airport
- They have a great bus system
- Cheaper parking

There are fewer incentives to ride rail right now. Give it time.

Oh... and in 1987 <<ahem>>:

Now I understand that the SkyTrain, ALR_F, was designed and originally projected to carry 12 to 15 percent of the total passengers for the lower mainland. At this time the figures I have are that it is carrying 23, 000 passengers per day, which is approximately 7.6 percent, which is quite a bit lower than the projected target for the overall ridership in the lower mainland. With these kinds of decreasing numbers and failure to meet the projected percentage, how does the minister hope to be able to cover the costs incurred by the system? Does she see the need for an increase in the actual fare charges for the SkyTrain and for the bus service?

I don't think Seattle should be mocked, but there is a lot of weird stuff going on down there WRT to public transit. How about the too short, but canceled Monorail, that still collected millions in license plate fees?

The SLUT (awesome acronym), suffers from the same issues as the LINK. Too small, weird path chosen.

Vancouver has 17 bus routes outperforming the multi billion dollar Seattle LRT. Nice. But to Seattle's defense, ridership doesn't come overnight.

This doesn't even count passengers on the 4, 17, 25, 41, 49, 84, and 480 passengers bound for UBC who may switch to skytrain.

I think 23,000 ppd was when Skytrain first opened. Our ridership didn't come overnight. Currently we're at about 10,000 ppphd. We should be up to around 13,000 ppphd give or take by next year.

My first question would be: what bus routes is the LRT replacing, and what was their ridership? Phase 1 looks like it doesn't even replace a full bus route (to the airport for example). It's like building the Evergreen line, but ending somewhere in Port Moody, short of Coq Centre and Douglas College.

With the Canada Line increase you mean? Sounds like we have lots of room to grow. C-Line platforms will be fine for decades, mark my words.
