Downtown 1999 was a very depressing place to say the least. No question it still has a ways to go today, but man if you tried to tell someone in '99 that 10 years later downtown would develop some sense of nightlife, you'd be laughed out of the room. And hey funny enough, the population has more then doubled DT since 99....as everyone here keeps saying, what dt needs is ppl ppl ppl.

FWIW, Graham Hicks originally posted in his article that an arena announcement would come shortly after the Indy. I think this then morphed into "announcement by Katz to come at the indy".

I think it's safe to say we'll hear something within the next couple of weeks.

Last thursday the ABCAGBC/Clark Builders took us on a nice tour of the of the Fed. Unfortunately i was restricted from taking photos in the reno portions but they are making good progress. It was amazing to be inside the building and to be able to see the amazing quality of materials originally used. I look forward to this beauty being restored, renovated, and given new life.

No kidding. I worked in Beaver House at that time, and it is like night and day. Just off the top of my head, these are the changes within one block in that area since that time:

- empty Bay building (now Enterprise Square)
- empty podium to the north (now Dynacare labs)
- empty building on the SE corner of 102 Ave and 103 St (now the YMCA pool)
- underused buildings on East side of 104 St (now loft condos with some cool stores inside)
- underused old metals building (now Ric's grill)
- gravel parking lots all along West side of 104 St (now the Century and the Icons)
- No Tim Horton's or Starbucks anywhere within walking distance (!)
- Cecil Hotel on Jasper and 104 which was a complete magnet for crime (now Sobey's)
*Bonus: the incredibly dodgy parade of potentitally dangerous people parading down 103 and 104 Streets between Cecil and Greyhound bus station that is now gone

The way that area has turned around (and is still going) within 10 years is remarkable. And I know there's a lot of stuff I am missing.

Hey so, not sure if it's been talked about yet on here, but does anyone know whats going into the main floor of the empty building on Jasper Ave. west of WTC Edmonton? There is a picture of a crown in the window and it says below "Fall 2009". This is the first time I've noticed and it peaked my curiousity.

Big news for Stantec

Edmonton’s Stantec lands large contract with Chevron

EDMONTON — Stantec (TSX: STN) has been awarded a global, multi-year, preferred supplier contract by energy company Chevron to perform environmental assessment and remediation, the Edmonton-based design firm said Thursday.

The contract involves assessing environmental, social and health impacts; environmental remediation; and auditing operations.

Stantec begins work under the contract immediately at sites throughout North America, South America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Russia.

“Our environmental team has had a strong relationship with Chevron for over 20 years and we’re excited to be further strengthening our relationship with them,” said Stantec president and CEO Bob Gomes, in a release.

Too bad they just renovated their head offices like 2? years ago. If they grow out of their present building though, they may one day get their own tower, like Epcor did.

STN already has 2 locations because they outgrew their towers. The head office reno was done at least 4 years ago though...
