why? well for starters you may well find yourself able to walk to the occasional restaurant/shop without having to drive to a destination you make sound so [un]attractive i can hear it now - "why don't we go out tonight and check out what's happening in and around those thousands of square meters of free surface parking we could make us of?"

and if you have to drive downtown from anywhere near downtown, you're parking cost - if any - is still likely going to be less than the cost of the gas you'll burn getting to many of those "thousands of square meters of free surface parking".

Was out by CP today, noticed a lot of earth moving going on to the west of the four new buildings. Getting ready for the first tower maybe ?

Edmonton hopes competition will improve architecture

EDMONTON - Planning officials hope Edmonton architecture will receive a shot in the arm this fall from the urban design award competition announced Tuesday.

A national jury featuring noted architect Douglas Cardinal of Ottawa will pick winners in six categories to be announced at a gala ceremony Nov. 18.

Mayor Stephen Mandel stated in a 2005 speech that Edmonton now has no tolerance for “crap” architecture, and the design seen in the area has been improving, planning and development general manager Gary Klassen said.

“I can say categorically that the applications we’re getting today, that are going through the design committee … is absolutely better work than we have seen from perhaps five or 10 years ago,” he told a news conference.

“One of the reasons is that good urban design actually pays for itself at the end of the day, in terms of success, in terms of building.”

The competition was started in 2005 and is held every two years.

The 2007 award of excellence winners from the 28 entries were the infill Bergstrom Block on Whyte Avenue near 96th Street, Enterprise Square and city market affordable housing above the former downtown farmers’ market.

Architects, engineers and others working in the field must put in their submissions by Oct. 8.

Of note also is that four new schools have been announced for the Edmonton area. They just hit the const. assn. yesterday.
