The Marriott Airport is still planned.

According to Coolnet a 4 story 192 room residence is being built by the U of A @ 87 ave & 110 st

^yup... the 3-5 houses are fenced off and ready for demo which is a shame to be honest for many look in good shape and of a wonderful era of design.

... alas it is progress.

Well, it better be high-quality progress in that case. Would this development have to be presented to the EDC, because I can't recall it ever being in the EDC minutes that I've read.

IIRC, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe University lands are exempt from EDC. Not sure as well if this Garneau development is technically on University land or just University-owned.

It's sad that some of those houses have to go, but there are a number that have not been well-maintained and have to be at least 80 years old. My only hope is that the U builds as tall as they possibly can - student housing will continue to be an issue as the U expands.

Was on campus for the first time in a while this week for a course - first time seeing what they've done with South Lab. I love it! CCIS is going to look great from Quad, too.

Once upon a time (maybe 7 years ago) the U had a whole height plan for North Garneau (since everything in there will be torn down eventually). Near the river was supposed to be low-rise, with the heights stepping up as you headed south. By the time you reached 87ave everything would be full high-rises like some of the other buildings around there.

This was right about the time of the proposed 15ish storey international students residence for the parking lot east of hub, which was later revised to the 6ish storey one they built.

Hopefully the building will at least look nice, since it sucks to lose heritage houses and get nothing. Bets on whether it will have retail? Because on 87ave it really, really, really should.

(and the U is outside the city's development permit process, so no EDC)

^nope i doubt it.... for just like 114st and 111st @ 87ave you can only have uni-use buildings according to the uni.

^ Which is pretty dumb, since it's not like the U isn't already a commercial landlord dozens of times over. There's even a precedent for it with Hub.

And retail along there connecting to a shiny Garneau and 109st would be most excellent. (much more so than the lamented lack-of-starbucks in the Edmonton Clinic)
